Chapter Twenty-one

Josie fidgeted in her new dress, turning from side to side in front of the giant mirror in the master bedroom closet. She had tried on several outfits at Bloomingdales in Lenox Mall, landing on a perky pink and white polka-dot dress that accentuated her tiny waist and athletic legs. Will had done his magic, giving her a fabulous trim and used a flat iron making her look extra chic. Her shiny, chestnut hair barely grazed her shoulders making her look like she had just come from an expensive salon.

She knew that she looked put-together, but still didn’t know why she was so nervous. Throughout her life, she had never really cared what people thought of her. It took her by surprise how much she really cared now, realizing how much in love she was with Will. She assumed she was mostly nervous about her blue collar up-bringing that she hoped wouldn’t come up. That, and the fact that her father had walked out on them, along with the college she attended, and the places her family vacationed, and the fact that she could only speak English.... She suddenly wished that she had been born with a silver spoon in her mouth, had attended a fine private school, and had participated in her own debutant ball.

“Josie, you look beautiful.” Will brought her out of her daydream by wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.

“You look good too.” He took her breath away, even wearing casual khaki pants and a blue button-down shirt. With his recent haircut, he looked more like a preppy college student than a formidable, successful millionaire.

“We look great together.” He smiled into her neck, breathing in her scent. “Are you ready to go?”

“I suppose....” She slipped her feet into her new shoes.

“Hey, it’s gonna be okay. No worries, all right?” He kissed her lightly on her lips before exiting the closet.

She stood for a moment, looking at her reflection in the mirror one last time. “No worries....”

Will maneuvered his Porsche slowly around the cobblestone driveway that circled a beautiful fountain in front of his mother’s home. The impressive plantation-style residence with its massive white columns oozed with southern charm. Giant baskets of faded begonias and ferns spilling over the sides like waterfalls hung from large black iron hooks every few feet along the enormous front porch. Several old-fashioned rocking chairs and a porch swing beckoned as they walked up to the massive, black-lacquered front door.

He smiled and turned to Josie before he rang the doorbell. “Are you ready?”

She was nervous and wide-eyed nodding her head. He clasped her hand tightly and pushed the button. Within seconds, an elderly ebony-skinned woman answered the door. Her soft, round face lit up at the sight of them, and she immediately placed her hands on Will’s cheeks.

“Here’s our handsome boy!”

Will had told her all about Ruby, who was his mother’s right hand. She had also been his nanny when he was a young boy, holding a soft spot in his heart for her.
