CHAPTER 10

ANNIE

As they made their final approach to the private landing strip just south of Otter Cove, Annie began to squirm.

“Stop,” he rumbled as he began to wake. “My truck should be in the hangar. We’ll head for home as soon as we land.”

“My place is closer, as is my brother’s.”

“No. We’re going home. I will call your brother and let him know you are safe and are with me.”

“Do you plan to tell him you took me to mate without my consent?”

“Well, I wasn’t going to lead with that, but if you prefer he knows that, you can tell him.”

“You’ll let me talk to him?” she asked incredulously.

“You are my mate, Annie, not my prisoner.”

“So far, it’s amounted to the same thing. Aren’t you worried that he’ll challenge you?”

“For what? My fated mate? You, my mate, are far too susceptible to my call. Combine that with the claiming bite on your neck and your altered DNA, I doubt he will do much but caution you to mind me.”

She wanted to argue with him, but she wasn’t sure he wasn’t correct. Besides what would the two of them fighting do other than get one or both of them severely injured? It was a bit startling to realize that the older brother she had always thought invincible would likely not win that challenge.

“You’re probably right, but as I’m stuck here, I’d like to alleviate his concern as to my safety and location.”

“That was my point precisely.”

They landed and Annie was a bit surprised to see Desmond, Otter Cove’s former sheriff, waiting to greet them. Deke pushed her behind his body.

“Desmond,” he said evenly.

“Deke. I see you found Zak’s little sister. Annie? You okay?”

She thought about saying ‘no’ and throwing Deke under the bus. The problem with that was if she wasn’t sure Zak could take Deke in a fight, she was pretty damn sure Desmond didn’t have a prayer.

“I’m fine, Des,” she said, skipping out from behind Deke. “The big bad here is in a growly mood and being a little overly protective.”

“I can take Annie to Zak,” offered Desmond.

Deke reached out, caught her by the arm and pushed her back behind him. “My mate will be with me. I will call her brother later today. We’ve had a long flight and I want to get my mate home.”

As Deke started to escort her to his truck, Desmond moved in behind him and pumped the shotgun he’d held pointing downward, racking the slide into place. Deke stopped and slowly turned to face him, once again shoving Annie behind his back.

“You might want to think about your next move, Des. Annie is my mate. She bears my claiming mark and Doc Hadley can confirm her DNA is now the same as mine.”

Desmond let the gun lower. “Annie? Does Zak know?”

If she wanted a confrontation, now was the time to make her case and enlist Desmond’s help in bringing Zak and his clan of warriors. She didn’t want that. She wasn’t sure even
