Ashlyn wasn’t sure what came over her, but after the day she’d had thinking of nothing but Reus, and the dinner where he couldn’t keep his eyes off of her, she’d needed to get him alone. Outside of the house was preferable, and she knew that he would like some fresh air.

After helping him up from the table, she grabbed a blanket and steered him towards the door. She thought she saw Clare give Artair a knowing smile, but hopefully she was mistaken. She’d lose her nerve if she thought that her parents knew of her attraction to Reus.

Outside, she walked him towards the loch in front of the house, then along the edge. She stopped at an area with short grass, and spread out the blanket. He looked at it with his brows knit together in concern.

“Don’t worry,” Ashlyn told him. “I’ll get you on your feet and back inside.”

Trusting her, he carefully sat down on the blanket, urging his joints to bend the way he needed them to. He let out a relieved breath when his butt was planted. Ashlyn sat beside him, their knees touching, and together they looked out over the loch.

It was a peaceful evening. The sun had just set, turning the sky all shades of orange, pink, and purple, which were reflected in the calm water. There was just enough light to see, and the stars were beginning to dot the sky. Which one was Reus from? Could his star even be seen from Earth?

“Do you know which direction your planet’s in?” she asked.

He shook his head and shrugged. No.

She wondered if it bothered him, not knowing where his home was. He seemed to be taking everything in stride, but that was only on the outside. She burned to know how he felt; to know what he was thinking.

“I’m sorry,” she told him sadly, meeting his gaze. When he gave her a quizzical look, she continued, “I can’t imagine what you must be going through. You’re on a strange planet, far from home, recovering from being woken from cryo-stasis by a random, strange woman. That’s a lot for anyone to take.”

He smiled at her description, and although it was getting dark, she could tell that the smile didn’t reach his eyes. She wasn’t too far from the truth.

“Did you make progress on the things you found in your ship today?”

He nodded.

“You’re going to use it to contact your people?”

Again he nodded, but this time the gesture cut at her chest. The thought of him leaving left her feeling hollow. It was stupid. She knew he couldn’t stay: it wasn’t safe for him here. Eventually someone would see him, and she couldn’t easily explain away his blue skin.

Still, the thought of him leaving was painful. Would she get to say goodbye? Or would his people sneak him out in the middle of the night without her knowledge? She immediately decided that that was worse. She didn’t want to live the rest of her life not knowing what happened to him.
