The house was quiet.
Wallace sat on the floor.
He stared at the dying embers in the fireplace, Apolloâs head in his lap. He rubbed the dogâs ears absentmindedly, lost in thought.
He wasnât aware he was going to speak until he did. âI never got to grow old.â
âNo,â Nelson said from his chair. âI donât suppose you did. And if youâd like, I can tell you that itâs not so great, that all the aches and pains are terrible and that I wouldnât wish it on anyone, but thatâd be a lie.â
âI wouldnât like that.â
âI didnât think you would.â Nelson tapped Wallaceâs shoulder with his cane. âDo you wish you had?â
And wasnât that a conundrum? âNot as I was.â
âHow were you?â
âNot good,â Wallace muttered. He looked down at his hands in his lap. âI was cruel and selfish. I didnât care about anything but myself. Itâs bullshit.â
âWhat is?â
âThis,â Wallace said, tempering his frustration. âSeeing how I was, knowing that thereâs nothing I can do to change it.â
âWhat would you do if you could?â
And wasnât that the crux of it? A question where any answer would serve only to show that heâd failed at almost every aspect of his life. And for what? In the end, what had it gotten him? Fancy suits and an impressive office? People who did whatever he told them the moment he said it? Jump, heâd say, and theyâd do just that. Not because of any allegiance to him, but out of fear of reprisal, of what heâd do if they failed him.
They were afraid of him. And heâd used that fear against them because it was easier than turning it on himself, shining a light on all his dark places. Fear was a powerful motivator, and now, now, now, he knew fear. He was afraid of so many things, but particularly the unknown.
It was this thought that made Wallace push himself up off the floor, suddenly determined. His hands were shaking, skin prickling, but he didnât stop.
Nelson squinted up at him. âWhat are you doing?â
âIâm going to see the door.â
Nelsonâs eyes bulged as he struggled to rise from his chair. âWhat? Wait, Wallace, no, you donât want to do that. Not until Hugo is there with you.â
He shook his head. âIâm not going through. I just want to see it.â
That didnât calm Nelson down. He grunted as he stood, using the cane to pull himself up. âThatâs not the point, boy. You need to be careful. Think, Wallace. Harder than you ever have in your life.â
He looked toward the stairs. âI am.â
