Julianne went to the clinic shortly after seven on Monday morning. It wasn’t open yet, so she had some time to herself. Edmund had told her he would be there at eight.

She made sure the ledgers in the computer program were up to date as of the prior Friday. With no clerical help, she and the other nurses had to keep up with the finances and the patients’ files, too. She wanted to be especially careful to stay on top of things so no one could find fault with her record keeping.

The black fog hanging over her spirits thickened. Last night, after going to bed, she’d wondered how long Tony had stayed at Diana’s. She’d also realized she was jealous. That had been a stunning revelation.

However, if he was interested in Diana, then how did either of them explain the kisses they had shared, the hunger that stirred them both when they were together?

And why, why, why did she want more from him when she, the most cautious virgin in the state, as her best friend had once teased, had never gone that far with any man?

Putting the distressing thoughts aside, she checked over the office and decided she was as ready for the audit as she would ever be.

Exactly at eight, Edmund tapped on the door.

“Hi,” she said when she let him in.

“Good morning. Wow, you look beautiful,” he said with an approving smile.

She wore a simple dress of hunter-green with a matching jacket trimmed in ecru lace. Gold earrings and taupe shoes and purse completed the outfit. Her heart thumped nervously at the thought of facing the district attorney and proclaiming her innocence or whatever one did.

“Tony and I are meeting with the D.A. today,” she explained.

“Do you have an attorney?”

She shook her head. “Unless you count my brother. He says there’s no real evidence against me.”

“Ancient artifacts aren’t evidence?”

She cast him a worried glance. “Do you think the judge will believe I didn’t know they were stolen?”

He took her hand and laid his other hand over it, stroking lightly along the back. “I’m sure he will. If Chief Windover’s word isn’t good enough, I have the report on you that I did for the council before you were hired. Your professional reputation is spotless.”

Her mouth dropped open. “You investigated me?”

“Checked on your credentials and references,” he explained. “I can vouch for your sterling character.”

His manner seemed sincere, but there was something about him that she didn’t quite trust. He was just too…too helpful.

She removed her hand from his grasp. “Thank you. I’ll let you know if you need to slip me a file so I can hack my way out of prison.” She managed a smile.

He chuckled, then gestured toward the desk. “Show me where you keep your records.”

Thirty minutes later she left him randomly pulling records and comparing them to the computer charts.
