Tye stood silently outside the small private hospital room watching, waiting. He should be used to seeing scenes like this by now. However, every time he was called upon, it seemed as if a small piece of his own soul â if he even had one â died.
He slowly entered the cramped room, where eight or nine people stood around a small hospital bed. The noises from the plethora of monitors were the only sound aside from the occasional sniffle from someone no longer able to hold in their emotions.
As soon as he stepped into the room, an eerie feeling of calm would come over those who had gathered. He knew they couldnât see, feel, or hear him, but he felt the need to tell them he was sorry, and he truly was.
Today was no different. Tye walked to the head of the bed and gently brushed the forehead of the sleeping boy, who was no more than five or six. He stood back and watched as the boyâs mother held his frail hand in hers. Next to her stood her husband, the boyâs father. He remained strong by her side, but the wear of months of emotion were clearly evident in his tired features.
âMommy and Daddy love you, Billy. Grandma and Grandpa areâ¦are going to take care of you now.â Tye could do nothing but watch the poor woman crumble as she said her last goodbyes to her child. Her husband held up her trembling body as the monitors long, drawn out beep signified the boyâs final breath.
âHey, Billy.â Tye smiled down at the young boy.
âAre you an Angel?â The small child sat up in bed and looked around the room, taking in his family that had gathered.
âNo, Iâm not an Angel.â Based on the human definition, yes, he was what people would describe as an Angel. He had the beautiful white wings people described Angels as having, but he was Death. Unlike Tim, who dealt with the scum of the Earth, Tye had been cursed with watching the innocent die.
âWhy are Mommy and Daddy crying?â The boys voice held no panic or concern, just the simple inquiry.
âBecause theyâre going to miss you very much.â Tye sat slowly on the edge of the boyâs bed and carefully unhooked the tubes and wires from the childâs arms. He was always so careful, even though he knew that pain and discomfort were no longer things his small charges could feel.
âWill I miss them, too?â The little boy looked up at Tye with the biggest and brightest set of green eyes Tye had ever seen, along with a mop of dirty blonde hair. Every bit of illness that had plagued the child was no longer evident in those bright eyes and rosy cheeks.
âNo.â For a split second, he couldnât help but wonder whether he and Maggieâs child would look like Billy, if they ever had one. Her big, bright eyes and blonde hair.
âWill I remember them? They were always really nice.â
âYouâll remember them always.
