Chapter 22

Wednesday, October 10

It had been a long day for Drago. He and Nikki were called in when the partially dismembered remains of a woman were discovered in a trash bin in Los Angeles and Spring. They'd spent the day interviewing their prime suspect, Patrick Gillespie, who, before the end of the day, had been charged with three counts of murder. Gillespie was accused of murdering his wife, Casey Gillespie, and her parents, who were visiting from Minneapolis, John, and Olivia Grant.

Talk about not liking your in-laws!

Usually, he'd dump the paperwork on the junior partner, but Nikki had been flagging, so he sent her to get a drink at Chatterbox Bar on Broadway and completed the Case Closure report. It took him a good hour to get an update on the primary case document that summarized the entire investigation. It included details about the crime, the investigation process, the evidence collected, arrests made, and the final outcome (such as an indictment, conviction, acquittal, or case dismissal).

He slid on a barstool next to Nikki and was concerned because she looked so forlorn.

"Howdy, pardner?" Drago went for a terrible Texan accent.

She looked at him and nodded. "Thanks for taking care of all the paperwork—"

"Don't worry about it. Trust me, you'll be finishing those off on your own soon enough."

Before Nikki could respond, the bartender hollered from the other end of the bar, "The usual, Horvat?"

"Yeah, thanks, man."

It took the bartender a few minutes to slide a cold bottle of beer towards Drago. He caught it and popped the cap off with his keychain and a practiced flick of his wrist. He took a swig, his eyes briefly meeting Nikki's.

She smirked as she sipped her vodka tonic. "What's the word on the street, Detective Horvat?"

"TDCJ gave us the green light to meet Soller on Friday," Drago replied, his gaze lingering on her.

"Damn! Isn't that the day when the unsub's going to take the next victim since we have no way of stopping it?" Her gray eyes were weary. "I read through Soller's victimology, and that man is scum. And now, we have another piece of scum wanting to emulate him."

"Your first case, and it's a serial," Drago murmured. "It's going to fuck with your head." And a very pretty head it was, Drago acknowledged. He liked her. She was way different from his previous partner, who was overweight, balding, and had a Marlboro red pack-a-day habit.

"I'm surprised Gomez hasn't pulled me off it." She downed her drink and waved to the bartender.

"I'm primary," Drago smirked, "And he ain't pulling me. We have Martinez and Lee helping us out. Trust me, if another body drops, we'll have more people up our ass helping with the case, and we need it. But you and I, we'll be the officers on record."

The bartender put a fresh vodka tonic in front of her and took her empty glass away. Nikki absently thanked the bartender for her drink.

"Where do you live, Wasco?"

"Echo Park. Don't worry, I'm gonna take an Uber.
