CHAPTER 22

Daniel

Now that she was here, I had no idea what I was supposed to do with Amy all weekend. What I wanted to do to her was a really bad idea. And I’d promised her I wouldn’t touch her unless she begged. Keeping my word would be the hardest thing I’d ever done. So I needed to come up with a plan and fast.

Fortunately, what I had expected to be an awkward night had hardly been awkward at all. Amy seemed to have relaxed when we got back from my dad’s place. She had eaten a plate of my lasagna with enthusiasm and was now curled up in front of the fire, sipping a glass of the wine I’d opened. She didn’t seem to be as wary of me as she’d first been, but I still caught her glancing toward me now and then, her expression unreadable.

I had been careful not to touch her, careful to keep distance between the two of us. I needed to show her that I really wasn’t a threat. That my stupid proposition for sex had been just that, a momentary lapse of my ethics born out of my desire for her. But as great as my instinct was to take her body and show her everything she had been missing, the instinct to protect her was greater.

“What were you planning to do all spring break by yourself?” I broke the silence.

She swiveled to look at me. “Study. Work on my final. Sleep in.”

“You know what they say, don’t you, Amy? All work and no play makes Jill a very dull girl.”

“I like to stay focused on my goals,” she shrugged.

“Have you always been such a go-getter?”

“I guess? In high school, I knew that the only way I’d get out of my hometown and away from my dad was to get a scholarship and make it happen myself. He wasn’t about to pay for anything.”

“Sounds like a challenging relationship?”

Her shoulders shrugged and the soft top she was wearing fell off of one shoulder. She’d changed into a comfortable loungewear set before dinner. Her hair fell across her shoulders and I wished I could curl my fingers in that luxurious mane. I decided I liked the sight of her here, comfortable and content in front of my fireplace.

I must have made her nervous because suddenly she popped up and walked into the kitchen.

“Did you bring anything sweet up here with you?”

I heard the freezer door pop open. Rising from the sofa, I followed her. Entering the kitchen, I eyed the sight of her ass as she peered into the freezer, her feet popped up onto her toes as she strained to look inside.

Placing my hands on her hips, I ignored the way she jumped when I touched her and instead, backed her out of the way. Turning her toward the counter, I gripped her and lifted her up until she was perched on the peninsula.

“What the hell?” She raised her voice, immediately going into defense mode.
