He kissed her and she threw her arms around his neck and melded her body to his.
Her favorite place to be—one last time.
CHAPTER TEN
Catherine leaned on her elbow in bed, watching him as he dressed. He raised an eyebrow at her, the corners of his mouth curling.
“Ye like to watch me dress, my sweet?”
“Aye, I do. Your body is quite pleasing to my eyes. Ye have wonderful muscles in your arms, even in your legs.”
“If ye dinnae stop looking at me as if ye’ll be having me for dinner, I’ll not be able to leave.”
As she watched, his erection grew underneath the plaid he’d just put in place, pushing at the heavy fabric. She snickered, pleased with this new power she possessed.
“Laugh at me, and that will quickly rid me of my hardness.”
She laughed harder and kneeled on the bed, falling toward him until he caught her in his arms, just as she’d known he would. “I shall let ye go, but not before I tell ye something. I love you, Graeme MacGregor. Ye are the nicest thing that has ever happened to me.”
Graeme cupped her face in his hands and stared at her, his eyes transfixing her. He did not have to say it back, but she knew he felt the same. He had spent so long fighting every hint of softness in himself that he could not put his own feelings into words. The look in his eyes told her all she need know. He kissed her, a kiss so soft that she sighed.
“Ye please me more than anyone ever has, sweet Catherine. But I must go. We have much to plan.” He gave her another quick kiss, then hurried out the door, still putting his sword in place. Before he closed the door behind him, he glanced over his shoulder at her and waggled his eyebrows, grinning suggestively. Oh, she would treasure the memory of these last moments.
As soon as he was gone, she knew what she had to do. She’d pack a few items to take with her, change into the lad’s clothing she’d kept, and leave through the tunnel Rory had shown her. There was no other way. Unsure of where the tunnel would take her, she hoped she’d find a horse somewhere along the way. The horse she’d started out with had to be out there.
When she was ready, she pushed the rug aside and opened the trap door. She dropped into the darkness below and then reached up for the lit candleholder she’d set on the floor where she could reach it.
How she prayed it would stay lit.
She crept down the stairs, able to find her footing at the base of the steps because of the light emanating from the open trap door. Moving slowly to ensure her candle was not snuffed out by a breeze, she followed the passageway in the only direction it led.
The path took a turn not far from the beginning, but then stayed straight for a while. The farther she walked, the more cobwebs she encountered and the damper the darkness felt.
