Chapter 5

Blowing her bangs off her forehead, Samantha looked around in triumph. There were still numerous boxes to unpack, but at least she had everything in the right room now. Her bed was made, and she had dishes and her coffeepot in the kitchen. Things were looking up.

She glanced out the large front window for the hundredth time. Blake hadn’t returned yet. Looking at the clock she’d just hung on the wall, Samantha tried to keep herself from worrying. He’d been gone for ten hours. How long of a shift did he have to work?

After jumping in the shower, Samantha grabbed her keys and headed out the door. A trip to the grocery store was next on her list. Blake’s side of the driveway remained empty. He’s a grown man. He doesn’t need his next-door neighbor to worry about him.

When she returned and unpacked all the groceries, Blake was still away. Exhausted after unpacking all day long, all Samantha wanted to do was go to bed, but she couldn’t—without knowing if he was okay. She picked up the key ring with her new apartment key on it. She loved the declaration that hung from the ring. It was a pink sparkly unicorn. This morning she noticed an extra key. She had a hunch about what door it opened.

Letting herself out at the back door, Samantha locked it before walking just a few feet to Blake’s. Tentatively, she slid the unknown key into the lock and turned it. Click. The handle turned, and she pushed it the door open.

Blake’s house was dark and quiet. Samantha turned the dead bolt and hung the sparkly unicorn key ring on the empty rack. Walking to the kitchen, she noticed that everything seemed less vibrant without its owner there—as if someone had sucked out all the energy when he left. Steadying herself with a hand on the wall as she yawned, Samantha’s last vestige of energy dissipated.

Without another thought, she turned into the nursery and walked to the crib. Kicking off her shoes, Samantha hopped up to land on her knees on the soft mattress inside. She stretched out and sighed in contentment. The enclosed bed felt as good as she remembered. As her eyelids fluttered shut, Samantha rolled onto her tummy and wiggled until she was comfortable.
