Nearly a week had passed since Samuel’s public beating, and Hana had not returned to the Noye House since.

How could she after what Kairo had said?

“Are you… planning on going today, Miss Hana?” Jaymes asked as he glanced at her through the rear view mirror.

The two of them were sitting in their car parked in front of the Noye House as they had done two times earlier that week. They had been sitting there for a little over half an hour.

“I can’t,” she mumbled under her breath.

“Then shall we return home? I know that I have been humoring you these past few days, Miss Hana, but you cannot afford to waste anymore time doing this childish rout—” Jaymes cut himself off and sighed, “I’m sorry Miss Hana, I did not mean to raise my voice.”

“I deserve it,” Hana murmured as she tucked her face into the crook of her knees that were folded to her chest. “I’m being childish.”

She knew she was being childish, making Jaymes make the hour drive back and forth only for her to remain seated in the car. But she couldn’t bring herself to go back inside. How could she, when what Kairo said was the truth she had refused to acknowledge all this time.

Hana cared for the other boys; she truly did from the bottom of her heart, but what could she do for them after she took home Aden and Chris? She didn’t plan for them to be there, she didn’t plan to fall in in love with them all as much as she did. Her original plan was to go to the Noye House and make Aden and Chris trust her. That was the plan; that was it. Nowhere did the plan account for four unplanned participants.

And when she had gotten along with the others as well as she did, she just went with the flow. She had never processed the untold nuances the future held, because she had never allowed herself to. She had just wanted to live in blissful ignorance, but that wasn’t fair of her, she realized that now.

“Okay,” Hana stated to herself in what she hoped was a confident voice. “Okay,” she repeated, trying to muster up any sense of courage. “Okay, I’m going in.”

“It’s about time,” Jaymes smiled warmly. “I don’t know what happened, Miss Hana, but if it gets too overwhelming, I’ll be right outside, so you can come back out any time you’d like.”

“Thanks Jaymes,” Hana gave him a weak smile.

She took another deep breath of air once she stepped out of the car, and another before she finally stepped in front of the cage.

“Hana!” Haru called out, being the first one to notice her.

The eyes of all the other residents lit up at her appearance—all except for one.

“Hi,” Hana waved meekly as she stood planted at the front entrance. She swallowed hard and glanced briefly at all of their faces before training her gaze on Kairo.

“Kairo, what you said was right,” she finally stated as she stared straight into his eyes.
