JOURNEYING WITH YOUTH

In the context of this article, I am drawing upon a conceptualization of journeying (Styres, 2011; Zinga, Styres, Bennett, & Bomberry, 2009) articulated as:

the passage from one place to another; is initiated by questioning, meanings, interpretations, and identity; is begun by making a conscious decision to move into unfamiliar territory while maintaining an observing and reflective frame of mind. Journeying is a place where spirituality is infused into the mind, body, and emotion states of our being; where our stories intersect and become interconnected with other stories. Journeying without intent is nothing more than aimless wandering. Purposeful journeying leads us to shift and transform the landscape of our previously held assumptions and paradigms. (p. 35)

In many ways, the mentors were teaching the youth about journeying through life by stressing the importance of self-reflection and journeying with intent. They modeled the interconnected nature and centrality of relationships identified by many Indigenous scholars (Archibald, 2008; Black Elk, 1953; Blackstock, 2009; Wilson, 2008) and helped the youth shift from aimless wandering to journeying with purposeful intent. The community aspects of the program were essential to showing the youth how stories intersect and become interconnected with each other. All of this was done in ways that honored the journeys of the mentors and mentees by tailoring the program to the skills and contexts of each mentor–mentee pair such that each pairing was unique and reflective of the journeying that they engaged in together and separately.
