They ate breakfast late. Shawn Romano did not give them a time heâd be back, but the doctors assumed that meant morning. He was an early riser and had a truly workmanlike attitude. To what end did he need to stay away longer than that?
The detached dock floated and worked perfectly for their need. Meticulously, they further mapped depths and activity, or rather, mostly, inactivity. The strange obstacle theyâd noted the day before had vanished. Nobody mentioned it, assuming it an erroneous blip and nothing more.
Some of the fish had returned from the river, which was a good sign. It took them nearly to lunch before they got to the spot they really wanted to check. Thoroughness demanded by research did not permit them leave to skip straight to the spot deemed a mysterious potential gold mine of information.
And gold mine it wasnât, but it certainly held tight to its mysteryâthe fissure, possibly a gateway, which might lead to an answer. The sonar dipped into the crack, but not far enough. Not nearly. The floor of the lake was between eighteen and forty-two feet, all mapped. At the center, where the gas bubbled, the sonar plunked into the abyss below.
The machine was waterproof. Melina wore a wetsuit and a tank. Dean and Cody wore their short-shorts and tanks. The trio donned headlamps. Dean and Cody kept the bulky contraption from falling too fast. Melina guided the way. Barbie and Dee were topside with a rope. Dee was never much of a swimmerâat most, a successful doggy-paddler. Barbie wore her one-piece, ready to jump in if the demand arose.
There were only three sets of scuba gear.
It was murky and dark. Melina had snorkeled enough to be a model for the men, but nothing is easy the first time. Luckily, it wasnât too deep and they had the sonar system clamps on for guidance. Theyâd fall, simple enough. Rising might be a chore for these two; pure muscle didnât exactly bob. Adversely, that muscle was a good set of tools for use.
They had no microphones so Melina waved and used her headlamp as an attention grabber. Down. Down. Down. It took nearly a minute to get the sonar to the floor. It took two more minutes to get in place over the gap.
From the coloration of the stone beneath her light, Melina recognized the fissure as recent. The hole was big enough for a person, even with a tank, but not for the sonar machine. The read-out was light green on the panel, hardly bright enough to see into the muck. The numbers were incredible. There was great mystery hiding in those depths.
Melina took the hands of both men, gripped them firmly on the sonar, and waved for them to stay put while she went back topside. In seconds, she breached and then snatched the breather from her mouth.
âI need a thermometer on a rope. A long one, like as much rope as weâve got.â
âGo on,â Dee said to Barbie.
Barbie rolled her eyes and then dove into the lake.
