Chapter Twenty-Four

Violet

“Is that all?” I ask, crossing my arms, my naked body streaked with mud.

“The best defense is a good offense,” he says.

“What do you have in mind?” I ask, my brain in total chaos. I was shot at, capsized, shipwrecked in a lifeboat, attacked by a shark, washed up on shore, and I hiked all the way up and down a mountain. Now the man I was falling in love with, turns out to be a secret agent whose sister is a prisoner in a pirate island warehouse. And he wants to break in there to get her out. And I thought being canceled on social media was challenging.

“I can find you a safe location to hide. Infiltrating the warehouse will be easier on my own.”

“You think I want to stay out here by myself? What if the pirates catch me? Why don't we go back to the other side of the island with the lobsters and coconuts?”

“My phone was being tracked by BSA HQ. They will notice my lack of communication eventually. Even if it is unlikely they will ever find us here.”

“This is insane.”

“I'm going to incapacitate one of the guards, confiscate his weapon and uniform, and use his keys to get into the building.”

“All that time, you were pretending. Was any of it real?” His hands settle on my naked shoulders, and he looks into my eyes. He has an earnest expression on his face. It’s the one he gave me when he told me to believe in myself and listen to my heart.

“Everything between us is real, as far as I'm concerned. When I said that you are mine, I meant it. None of that has changed.” The man in front of me is a stranger. “My feral desire for you was more powerful than anything I'd ever experienced before. It quickly turned into something else. My need to protect and cherish you grew stronger by the moment, but my superior officer wanted me to continue to use you as an asset to get closer to Shawn.”

“To get closer to Shawn? Why?”

“Shawn Peterson is one of the primary suspects in my investigation.”

“Are you kidding? Shawn is one of the kindest people that I have ever known. Maybe you aren't even a special agent. Maybe you're just some delusional psycho.”

“Violet, please. You have to listen to me. Everything I told you about my family was true. My sister is in that building. She disappeared six months ago when she was nine months pregnant. I don't even want to imagine what they've been doing to her in there.”

“I had no idea any of this was happening,” I say, suddenly a lot less angry and a lot more scared. “I don't know what to think, James… I mean Jesse… I want to trust you. Everything that we've been through in the last few days should show me that I can. We've been there for each other through thick and thin. That means something. Your story sounds crazy, and I’m angry and hurt.
