RAZE

Raze watches his sister stop as if someone just punched her in the gut. Lexis glances down at the mace she’s now holding. The weapon that was gifted to her.

She falters, as if she’s never held the weight of one before. As if she doesn’t realize the damage it can inflict.

In that moment, Raze realizes she won’t kill the Fairbanks boy.

And for some confusing reason, he’s relieved. One blow from the mace and he would’ve been dead.

It would’ve been an easy kill. But also a heartless one.

Lexis spins around so her back is to the twins. She glances at Raze and he knows what she’s communicating. One Cragg is dead. If they kill another, this Tournament is won.

“Kill them!” roars Slab, his hot gaze on the Ghosts of Fairbanks.

“Why would we?” taunts Lexis. “All we need to do is end one of you.”

Slab’s massive shoulders flex as his head drops menacingly. “Me daughter will be avenged.”

Everything in Raze stills. The stakes just went up exponentially. The woman lying in a pool of blood was the Cragg leader’s daughter.

Their need for blood is no longer only fueled by the desire to win the Tournaments. It’s now powered by vengeance.

Slab points a thick finger at Winter. “She’s dead.” His arm swings to include her brother who just moved closer to her. “And then he is.”

Raze’s muscles coil as he clears his mind, shutting out the dull pain of the bruises he’s already accumulated. The Ghosts of Fairbanks won’t be dying today.

Which means someone else will.

The People of the Cragg come at them as one solid mass of fury, square faces twisted and snarling.

Lexis runs, just as Raze expected she would. Not only does it mean maintaining some distance between the Cragg and the Fairbanks twins, but she’s letting them know she’s not afraid.

That she’ll meet them head on.

Raze joins her, glad she has the mace. There’s no way they can stop this wall of hatred without it.

She swings it back, her arm stretching to gain the widest arc possible. Raze calculates the trajectories in the same way Lexis would be. She’ll need to bring down the mace at just the right time to hit Slab in the side of the head. A one blow kill.

The mace sweeps in a diagonal curve, Lexis letting out a grunt with the exertion. Slab doesn’t slow his furious pace, either too stupid to realize what’s coming, or too stupid to care. Raze braces himself for it to hit flesh, wishing he didn’t already know what it will sound like.

But Slab twists at the last moment, turning his head and angling his body. The mace slams into his shoulder, and instead of impaling in muscle, it glances off as if it just hit rock instead of man.

They have some sort of armor under their clothes!

Slab crashes through Lexis, knocking her out of the way like an annoying pebble, the mace flying out of her hand. She tucks herself in as she tumbles over the dirt, quickly regaining her footing the first opportunity she gets.
