Chapter 24

Zale

My scream echoes through the room, beating against the bare floors until it feels like they are crying out in concert with me.

Godden stands above me, a loving smile on his face as he grinds the heel of his boot into my ruined right leg. “Yes, little bear. Scream for me. Let my name fill your mind. Let it consume your throat, your heart.” He pressed down into my battered flesh.

Glaring at him, I cut off the sound of my voice. This man would get nothing from me. Not one more note to feed his creepy fantasies or his unrequited love. I owed him nothing and that’s exactly what he would get from me.

His blue eyes glittered as he leaned down. “Your spirit is one of the things I’ll enjoy breaking most.” Lifting his knee, he brought his foot down hard on my thigh.

Blood filled my mouth as I bit my tongue to keep from making noise. Inhaling in rough gasps, I felt the warm, coppery liquid dribble down my chin. I raised a hand, my middle finger speared up.

He tipped his head back and laughed like a loon.

While Godden reveled in his victory, Marnie got to her feet. She’d been sprawled on the floor when I’d rejoined the living as Godden smashed his foot into my leg. From between his legs, I watched as Marnie wiped the back of her hand over her mouth. It was smeared with blood when it dropped back to her side.

She looked at me, looked at Godden. When she shifted to look at Godden once more, she narrowed her eyes and something dark twisted her mouth. I could almost see the wheels turning in her head as she spied the chair resting on its side.

Shit. My girl needed some cover.

Gathering all of my courage, I rolled over into Godden’s weight, freeing my left leg. With a quick flick, I kicked him in the crotch. At least, that’s what I aimed for. His thigh took the brunt of the attack.

And I saw my punishment flare to life in his blue eyes when his head jerked down to look at me; a hungry look on his face. “Little bear, you want to play rough? We can play rough.” He caught my left ankle in his strong grip. Without taking his eyes off mine, he wrenched my foot to the side in one smooth hard jerk.

Blinding pain shot through me and I couldn’t hold back the scream. Sweat broke out over my entire body as my leg dropped back to the ground, limp as a wet noodle. My vision winked in and out as I tried to blink it clear of the tears.

“STOP IT!” Marnie shrieked as a loud crash sounded.

A heavy weight fell on top of me, cutting off what little air I’d been able to suck in. In an instant, I was back in that fateful elevator car. My lungs burned for air as my body wracked with icy hot pain.

It came back to me in flashes.
