She climbed out of the taxi and walked away in a trance. She must have looked even worse than she thought because Harriet, who was carrying groceries out of the open trunk of her Toyota Fortuner, stopped what she was doing to look over at her.

“You okay there, sweetie?”

Beth stopped and forced a smile. “Yes. Why?”

Harriet put down the bag and walked over. She put an almost motherly hand on Beth’s arm. “You look pale. Is everything okay?”

Her neighbor didn’t know about Dany’s death because there had been no reason to tell her. She had never officially met Dany anyway, though they’d seen one another once or twice when Dany came over.

“Everything’s okay.” Beth tried to put on a more convincing smile.

Harriet clearly didn’t buy it. “Sure? You don’t look fine.”

“Yes. I’m sure.”

“Okay, sweetie. But if you ever need someone to talk to…”

Beth nodded and walked away before the other woman could finish. She could still feel Harriet’s eyes watching her and wished she could have taken Harriet up on her offer. What she wouldn’t give to have someone to confide in. Someone like Dany.

She walked faster, passing No. 5’s red Toyota, and quickly went inside the townhouse.
