Children Learn Trust from Their Mothers

Sociological studies confirm again and again the importance of the mother-child relationship in learning to trust. Discerning a vocation to diocesan priesthood requires a great deal of trust. To overcome fear and anxiety, trust in God is essential—trust that he loves you, that he knows what is best for you, and that his plan will always bring you happiness and fulfillment. So many people in our culture grow up in families where a father was absent, physically or emotionally. The breakdown of the traditional family is a great spiritual problem, and many priests come from such families. I believe that a tender love and devotion to the Blessed Mother is the key to gaining trust in God our Father and his plan for us. She must be a part of our daily prayers. This is why, in every vocation story, her name always comes up.
