Chapter 16. Wyn

“Mother? What are you doing here?”

As we approached, a tall man in his early twenties emerged from the sarangchae, the main room of the house, to the wooden ledge outside. His hair was in a knot on top of his head, and he wore a long, dark-blue robe with pants underneath. A servant quickly brought his shoes as he stepped down onto the ground.

“Can’t a mother visit her son?” Lady Yi said with a gentle smile, watching the young man approaching us with pride in her eyes.

He stopped a few feet in front of her and bowed. “Of course. I’m always happy to see you, Mother.”

And I could tell he meant it. The love and respect between them was obvious from the way they looked at each other, even without moving physically closer. If I’d ever had a loving mother, and if she’d ever visited me, I’d probably have pulled her into a tight hug. But not everyone hugged to show their love. I had noticed that a physical show of affection was definitely not a thing in Korean culture, although the Sanang boys sometimes seemed to be the exception.

“You should have sent word that you were coming. I’d have at least gone out to escort you from the eastern gate.”

“We were in a hurry, and I did not get here by regular means.”

At Lady Yi’s mention of “we,” the man finally acknowledged us with a curt bow. “And you have arrived with guests.”

His gaze lingered on the unconscious Saem in Hosin’s arms, but he didn’t make any comment. He behaved as though having strange visitors, even ones who might be sick or hurt, was a common occurrence in his life.

“They came to see your father, and it’s rather urgent. Is he in?”

“I’m expecting him any time now. He went to speak with the king early in the morning. I thought he’d return before lunch, but he hasn’t yet.”

“I see.” She motioned for a servant to approach. “Please set up tea in the main room and prepare byeolchae for our guests. We’ll also have a light lunch when General Shin arrives.”

The servant bowed respectfully and rushed away.

Lady Yi motioned us to follow and walked ahead of us to the main house. Her son followed a step behind, and we did as well. A servant swiftly opened the sliding door to what I assumed was the equivalent to a living room. As the weather was getting chilly, ondol, the hot floor system typical in most Korean houses, was already on. We each took a cushion on the floor as the servants brought in a table, refreshments, and snacks in a flurry of movements.

Lady Yi took the spot at the center of the table, and her son sat to her right. Interesting. What little I’d learned about the social structure of Korea had made me think it was a patriarchal society, especially this far back in history. But that didn’t seem to be true in this household. Lady Yi must
