Two hours later, Emerson Perkins arrived at the emergency room of NYU Medical Center.

Flying through the automatic doors, “Josie, where is she?” he unceremoniously asked as soon as he spotted her.

“Emerson, thank you for coming,” Josie responded, the relief evident in her tone.

She had tried to contact her husband, Carl, but with his job as a technician for Con Ed, he very often had to work under the streets of New York. When she got no response from him, and still hadn’t heard from him after ninety minutes had passed, Josie assumed that was the case, especially since she had put in the code 911.

“What happened, Josie? Where is she?” Emerson insistently inquired a second time.

“She’s with the doctors. They’re running all kinds of tests, trying to find out why she passed out.”

Biting his bottom lip to quell his worry, his face wore confusion and even more concern than when he first arrived.

“She passed out? Where?”

“We went to see Chicago. I was sitting right next to her,” Josie explained as tears formed in the corners of her eyes. “I didn’t even know anything was wrong. Just before the intermission, she basically collapsed onto my shoulder. When I tried to wake her, she wouldn’t move.” Crying openly now, Josie continued, “I didn’t even know what was wrong.”

Pulling her into his arms, Emerson tried to comfort her. “Josie, it’s okay. You were there with her. That’s the important thing. You were there.”

“I’m scared, Emerson,” she cried against his chest.

“Why?”

“She’s been having these pains for a while now. She keeps saying they’re nothing big, but they’ve been coming too frequently, probably more frequently than she’s even telling me.”

“Has she seen anyone about them?” he asked.

“No. She kept saying, ‘I’ll be alright.’” Josie moved slowly out of his embrace.

Emerson swore under his breath. Still the same stubborn girl he’d loved.

“Have you spoken to her mother?”

“No, I didn’t want to call her until I knew something definitive. I don’t want to get her all upset over nothing.”

“Thank you for calling me, Josie.”

Moving back to the seat she was occupying when he arrived, Josie told him, “Despite everything you guys have been through, I’ve always known that you care about her.”

“I do and I’m glad you understand that. I wish she did.”

“Well, you have to look at it from her point of view. She got the short end of the stick when you guys broke up. You wanted something she would never be able to give you and that, by itself, was painful for her.”

Emerson sighed as he took the vacant seat next to her. “I know I should have handled that better than I did. Hindsight is twenty-twenty. She probably won’t be too happy to see me when they’re through with her, but I want her to know that I’m here for her; that I’ll always be here for her when she needs me.”

Reaching over to take his hand, Josie simply responded, “I knew you would.”

“Mrs. Smith,” one of the attending physicians suddenly called out.

“Yes, I’m Mrs.
