GRAY

AZIEL LAUGHS AS I wipe a speck of blood off his cheek, the man not caring if my actions have the seven generals sitting around the large stone table looking at him funny. He usually does a better job of cleaning himself before these meetings, but it seems he forgot today.

Luckily for him, I’m here to help.

“I’m excited to have you back,” I say.

Aziel and Silas left two days ago, the pair leading separate missions along the Wrath border. Aziel’s was successful, and he arrived a few hours ago with blood-splattered skin and a victorious smile.

Aziel’s ugliest, tattooed general scoffs. “We’re in the middle of a meeting.”

The Wrath generals have been more argumentative than usual, and they’ve been pushing Aziel’s boundaries after hearing the details of the Lust ceremony. I suspect that’s the reason Aziel chose to lead a unit into battle instead of remaining at home base and sending one of his generals, but I won’t insult him by asking.

He wants the respect of his people, and I won’t mock him for it.

I should’ve known the council members would never keep quiet about the ceremony, and I’m willing to bet they’ve been excitedly telling everybody who will listen how Aziel bent for me. I’m pretty proud of it, but unfortunately, it negatively affects how Aziel’s generals view him.

I turn toward the door as Silas comes storming in. He’s also covered in blood, maybe even more than Aziel, and I can barely contain my excitement as he makes his way into the room.

Aziel hasn’t sent me out to fight as he’s done with Silas, and I’ve been stuck at our main camp near the southern border of Wrath. I prefer to spend my time at home base, and I know I’m only here as a figurehead, but I still take offense.

Fighting’s never been my thing, but I’m more than a morale booster.

“Mammon’s cleared out her two strongholds near Black River,” Silas says, gesturing for the general sitting on Aziel’s right to move.

The Wrath scrambles to his feet. I thought it was a bit cocky of him to claim the spot to Aziel’s right in the first place, and I’m happy Silas isn’t letting it fly. He locks eyes with the general as he sits, the silent message loud.

Aziel doesn’t even notice the interaction, the man too busy poring over the maps on the table.

“What about the ogres?” Aziel asks, grabbing his marker to strikethrough the two strongholds Silas was sent to take care of. “We heard reports that they were camping out on the peak.”

I go to the water jug along the far wall and fill a glass for Silas. The fate doesn’t look injured, which is good, but I’m sure he hasn’t been eating or hydrating as well as he should be. We don’t need as much food to survive as the weaker breeds do, but it’s still good for us.

Silas was gone for two days, and he needs to replenish.

I promised Charlie I’d take care of our males, and I’ll be damned if I slack on my duties.
