Chapter 22
Ellie and Gavin traipse through the door exhausted and frozen as it had started to rain. Their coats are dripping onto the floor as the dogs run to greet them.
âOh, for goodnessâ sake youâll catch your death!â Peggy ran towards them fussing.
âOh, let me get that coat off you, now Iâve made you some stew I know thatâs your favourite. Now you sit down, and Iâll bring you a plate and a nice cup of tea.â Peggy carried on as she fussed over Gavin, hanging his coat up and leading him off towards the kitchen. Ellie watched this bemused, still dripping on the floor.
âNo donât mind me, Iâll just catch pneumonia or consumption!â Ellie shouted towards the kitchen as she heard a chuckle. Kate walked through from the kitchen and takes Ellieâs coat off her.
âPoor babyâ Kate jokingly soothed as she hung Ellieâs coat up and then kissed her nose.
âThanks sweetieâ¦at least someone cares!â Ellie shouted towards the kitchen.
âOh, stop moaning Eleanor, your wife is here to fuss over you so why do you need me?â came the curt response.
âCharmingâ muttered Ellie as she put her arm around Kateâs waist and walked towards the kitchen. âGood to see Iâm valued around here, could be dead in a ditch but so long as her little prince is okâ¦â
Ellie sits down at the kitchen table, giving Gavin a sour look as he gave her a smug grin with a mouth full of stew. Kate placed a bowl of stew and a cup of tea in front of Ellie and sat down beside her as Peggy continued to fuss in the kitchen. Aggie walked through from the hallway looking distracted, she quickly pocketed her phone once she realised everyone was there.
âHello everyone, full house at last? Ellie, you look half drowned! Why has no one got you a towel?â
It was Ellieâs turn to look smug as Aggie rushed towards the drier and pulled out a warm fluffy towel to drape over Ellieâs sodden shoulders. âAt least my mother-in-law loves me.â she muttered into her stew as Kate elbowed her in the ribs.
âStop being so melodramatic dear it doesnât suit a woman of your height.â said Peggy as she sat down with a cup of tea and pursed her lips.
âOh Iâll be going out shopping tomorrow afternoon everyone, just in case you wonder where Iâve gone.â Aggie said in a light tone but Peggy drew her a suspicious look.
âShopping? For what? Weâre supposed to be in lockdown from a potential fruit loop killer!â Peggy cried. âWhat on earth is so important?â
âI need new shoes.â Aggie said simply but with a tone that clearly stated, âdonât question meâ.
âHow did your interviews go today?â Kate asked quickly before war erupted.
âWell, our visit was definitely illuminating.â Ellie responded with a mouth full of stew. âSandra, the night shift nurse, confessed that she wasnât really sick but was told to call in by the bank agency so that she could claim their prize draw holiday.â
âOh lovely, where did she go?â asked Aggie excitedly.
