âJake, stop pacing. Come and sit for a minute.â Kat patted the couch next to her. She had to admit to herself that she was also nervous about meeting Marcus, but it wouldnât help Jakeâs anxiety to show it.
He jumped up and laid his chin on her thigh.
âTaxi should be here in a couple of minutes. Just a short ride, donât worry.â Kat checked her phone again. No new messages from Marcus. Heâd texted his location earlier that evening. Her phone buzzed; a notification â from the taxi company. It was three minutes away.
âOkay, time to go.â She announced cheerfully Jake's ears pricked up and he jumped down panting excitedly. âGood to see that the dog part of you is okay with going out,â she chuckled, clipping his lead on. She slung a rucksack over her shoulder and they headed out.
Just after the lift had begun to descend, it stopped â one floor down. The door opened revealing Poirot, carrying his little dog. Immediately, it began yapping at Jake. It was more one long joined up screech than a series of barks. Kat winced at the noise as the doors closed. The man was dressed in some kind of smoking jacket, and was he in Pyjamas? Kat stared ahead trying to ignore the pair â he made no attempt to acknowledge Jake and Kat, nor did he try to stop Foufou barking.
Jake looked up at the little dog, emitted one thunderous bark that shook the lift car. Foufou was immediately silenced and tried to burrow deeper into her masterâs arms.
As for Poirot, his look of disapproval ratcheted up several levels. His little moustache trembled with indignation as his eyes bored holes into the lift door.
Kat stifled a laugh as Jake sat, panting.
The lift came to a gentle rest and the doors opened. Kat and Jake stepped out, but Poirot and his little dog remained. She looked back, wondering why they werenât getting out. As the doors closed again, Kat noticed a puddle on the floor.
âThatâs quite a big puddle for such a small dog, donât you think?â she said. Jake panted and huffed.
The taxi app chimed at the exact moment that a cab stopped on the road outside the lobby. Jake wagged his tail and eagerly followed Kat into the back. The dog friendly cab had a large interior like the big black ones she sometimes took when she needed to go to London. No need for the owner to worry about dog hair or worse on the seats. There was plenty of space for luggage, she noted as the cab pulled away.
Jake lifted his nose and sniffed at the windows as they made their way through unfamiliar streets and onto the dual carriageway that led to the next town. Eventually, that road would take them, to coast. That would be quite an adventure to take Jake on some day.
âJake, you want to go see the sea some day?â she said quietly. The road was dark outside and heâd lost interest in that for now.
