Chapter 9

Bethany

When I woke the next morning, I woke rested. It was an unusual feeling. It had been a long time since I had gone to sleep and not had nightmares. Warmth seeped into me from Alec’s body and I realized my head was laying on his shoulder and my arm was draped across his chest.

His arm was around my back holding me securely against his side. I turned my head up to look at him and found him watching me. Something felt different this morning, but I was not sure what.

“Good morning,” he said very softly, an adorable smile on his lips. “How did you sleep?” he asked me.

I didn’t know why that question startled me, but I slowly sat up and turned away from him, bending my knees in front of me. The blanket dropped to my waist, but I did not attempt to cover myself with it. Something definitely felt different this morning, but in a good way. I could not explain it.

I felt Alec sit up in the bed beside me. He pressed a kiss to my shoulder, and his hand gently rubbed my back. I turned to him in surprise.

“It’s gone,” I said suddenly, looking up at him. “Well, I don’t know. Not gone, but it’s different. Something is different and I can’t explain it,” I told him, crossing my arms around my legs and lowering my chin onto my knees.

“Bethany, are you okay?” he asked hesitantly. I turned and grinned at him and nodded. Then I reached my hand up to his cheek.

“I am more than okay, Alec. It’s like…like I’ll never be sad or afraid again. I didn’t dream last night, and I know I have you to thank for that. I finally feel at peace, like what happened between us was meant to happen, and I am okay with that. Your touch, it no longer makes me feel like I’m losing control. Instead, it makes me feel as if I belong…to you,” I told him honestly.

He lowered his head to mine and kissed me. It was not the hungry and passionate kiss from last night, but a tender and affectionate kiss, and I melted into him. He wrapped his arms around me, and I had never felt so safe and protected. It was too soon to evaluate everything that I was feeling inside, but it was so much more than just love, and I knew we had the rest of our lives to figure it out.

“Why don’t you go shower, and I’ll meet you downstairs for breakfast when you are dressed,” he said softly. I nodded, and he turned to leave the bed, but I reached out and grabbed his arm. He looked back down at me.

“There’s room for two in there,” I said shyly, indicating my bathroom. A smile spread across his face, and he reached for my hand, helping me from the bed.

“I have a better idea,” he said with a wicked gleam in his eyes. He pulled me towards the bedroom door and opened it, glancing down the hallway before pulling me out of the room.
