Give kids a taste of success and you increase the odds that they might even love learning for learningâs sake.
Success-oriented planning leads to success-oriented instruction. In addition to thinking through the details and logistics of specific activities, planning also addresses what the kids can do, where their interests lie, and how to best reinforce the studentsâ commitment, risk taking, perseverance, and belief in their own potential for achievement. Give kids a taste of success and you increase the odds that they might even love learning for learningâs sake. But perhaps the greatest benefit of success orientation in a classroom is its ability to sharply reduce instances of disruption, confusion, frustration, conflict, off-task behavior, and wasted time that often occur when kids figure that as long as theyâre going to fail anyhow, they may as well have a good time. Success orientation wonât eliminate every classroom problem we might encounter, but it will certainly help prevent the majority of discipline issues that arise when kids do not understand directions or content, or when they see no possibility for school successâregardless of how they behave.
