Chapter Nine

Cecile didn’t have much time to contemplate her feelings for Luke or the choice she’d made as, once the next morning arrived, work took over. In fact, except for staff meetings and the stage directions she heard over her headpiece, she didn’t have any direct contact with Luke until their lunch on Friday.

And as that moment approached, her concentration lapsed. She bumped into a camera stand. Another time, she forgot her notes and had to call Janice and have her bring them down to the set. The man had rattled her nerves, and Cecile was amazed how aware of him she was, especially now that she’d turned him down and he’d embraced option B full force.

Once, she’d even been pressed up against him in a crowded elevator following a staff meeting. It was the most difficult—and intense—half minute she’d spent with any man. Thankfully everyone else had been oblivious to the growing ache in her heart each time she came in contact with Luke. Option B was not pleasant, and three days later the chemistry and the longing were stronger than ever.

Her watch read ten fifty-five, and she’d be meeting him for lunch in five minutes. She’d finished the storyboards and patted her portfolio as she made her way to his office. Luke’s assistant had sent an e-mail this morning indicating that lunch would be held there.

Although when she arrived, she discovered they wouldn’t be eating alone. Susan and Matt were already in the room, tearing into the box lunches they’d each grabbed from the greenroom.

“I brought you a turkey club,” Susan said, gesturing to a paperboard box. “Will that work?”

“Sounds fine,” Cecile said. She set the portfolio next to a chair and took the box that Susan indicated. “What’s up?”

“This is the only opportunity Luke’s got to discuss the upcoming segments. Allegra decided that she definitely wants some background that we’ve filmed ourselves before she has the drivers into the studio. So we’re heading to Chicagoland Speedway tonight to get some shots of our guests. Ricky’s also going the moment he finishes filming this afternoon.”

“Okay,” Cecile said slowly as she unwrapped her sandwich. Inside the container was a can of soda, a bag of chips, a deli sandwich and a gourmet cookie.

“It’s going to be a crazy weekend,” Susan said. “We’ll travel with four two-man film crews so that we can follow our guys around and locate some rabid fans.”

“We’ll shoot pieces on our drivers on Saturday,” Matt said. “Whatever race footage we want we’ll just get from other media outlets.”

“Research also came back with about ten wives willing to be interviewed, so I figured you could use the time to narrow down which ones we should go with,” Susan added.

“I have those storyboards all worked up,” Cecile said, a bit of a frown on her face. She was going on-site as well? Talk about being left in the dark. She remembered Luke discussing his trip with Devon and Elizabeth. He’d probably just assumed she’d known.

“I have my storyboards on the die-hard fan,” Susan said and Cecile focused.
