I watched Thad as he walked alone in the school hallway. He was surrounded by other kids, but didnât even attempt to interact with them. Outwardly, he projected indifference with a touch of arrogant dismissal, but I knew what he was feeling inside. I had been him, once upon a time.
A few kids tried to get Thad to at least look at them, but it was as if his eyes did not see them. He was a very lonely boy, but he wouldnât take the risk of getting close because he truly believed he would have to leave sooner or later.
I sighed. Iâd convinced him to stick around for the time being, but Thad was a tough one. He was going to be difficult to help.
Thad looked up as if he felt me looking at him. He smiled for the briefest of moments and then remembered himself. I nearly laughed, but I didnât want to make him angry. Instead, I walked toward him.
âReady for an adventure?â I asked.
âHell yes. Iâm ready right now.â
âTonight, after Angel and Kurt are asleep. Iâll tap on your window again.â
Thad smiled again for a moment. If he wasnât careful, it would become a habit.
We continued on, each going our own way, and yet we were each changed by our brief encounter. Most didnât understand the significance of seemingly chance encounters, but I did. I couldnât push Thad, but I could nudge him here and there to get him to where he needed to be.
I went about my day as always. I was a people watcher. I found them endlessly fascinating and amusing, but also sad. So few of them realized what they had or were able to appreciate it. Thad didnât know it, but his life had changed. Everything could change for him if he just took a chance.
I stood outside Thadâs home that night and threw only a single pebble at his window before he appeared. He was out the window and down the rose trellis in no time.
âWhat is tonightâs adventure?â he asked.
âWeâre going to do something you said you wanted to do. Weâll need a couple of shovels.â
Thad grinned. Gone was the façade he put up for others. When we were alone, he was a different boy.
After a quiet trip to the tool shed, we were off to the town cemetery. Most would be horrified by what we planned to do, but we werenât graverobbers and we werenât vandals either. We were explorers. And tonight, we were going to explore a grave.
I had selected a grave in advance. It was the grave of a boy our age who had died in 1922 and had no living family. He was forgotten by the living, so if anyone discovered what we had done, they wouldnât be especially upset. Our goal wasnât to harm anyone, but to satisfy Thadâs curiosity.
The grave was located in a quiet corner of the cemetery, so we were unlikely to be discovered. This part of the cemetery was rarely visited even in the light of day.
