The next morning, Zekeâs arms were loosely wrapped around me. With all the grace and quietness I could muster, I rose off the bed, checking my phone that was blowing up with texts from my coworkers.
They were telling me I was late for work. I myself and got up quickly. Shuffling quietly, I looked back at Zekeâs sleeping form. He looked passed out. The aftermath of drinking that stupid drink that did not need to have ever been created. He looked oeaceful though. I was glad we made it out of last night unscathed.
Gliding down the stairs with nothing but Zekeâs clothes and my stained sweater in hand, I stopped at the bottom of the stairs as Reggie and Lance stood at the entrance, talking about something.
âDid we get any answers from her yet?â Lance asked.
Then their postures shifted, sensing my presence .Why am I having the walk of shame when we didnât even do anything? So unfair. In front of his intimidating brother too.
âGood morning,â I said, hoping my voice sounded casual. Both of them returned the greeting, giving me indescribable looks. I managed to smile despite my humiliation. âGot to go to work.â
âYou couldâve slept in and taken the day off,â Lance surprised me by offering. Then, he added, âIf you want.â
I shook my head, thinking of the sleeping prince upstairs that was too much for me to handle right now. âI think work is exactly what I need right now.â
As I was about to go through the door, Lance stepped in front of me. His gaze met mine, and it was softer than I thought it would be. âThank you, Stella, for last night. I know it wasnât easy for you to . . . deal with him. But you have my gratitude.â
At least someone was grateful. I shot Reggie a Reggie before turning back to Lance. I had to ask because I had to know. âWill Zeke be okay?â
âThe prince is spoiled rotten from those of us around him, especially from . . .â Reggie cast a sideways look at Lance, who looked sheepish. A dimple appeared on the older brotherâs cheeks as he smiled.
âI can never say no to him,â Lance confessed. My heart lurched at how obvious Lance loved Zeke. It was nice to see for myself the love they both had for each other. âWorry not. My brother is the strongest person I know. And he has such an amazing friend like you. I have no doubt heâll be fine.â
That made me smile. Why was he trying to make me feel better? A whole lot better, in fact. âThanks. But definitely tell Zeke Iâm mad at him.â
âOh, I will.â Reggie smirked then. âHe has a lot of explaining to do.â
Tell me about it. I said good bye to them. I then opened up my phone, with only on 12% of battery life, and called Lou. It went straight to voicemail. She usually my ride to work.
âReggie?â I called, turning back. âCan I ask for a favor?â
âWhat?â he deadpanned.
