Two For One

Kara’s Story

Every couple months, eight of us met at the Union Bar. It was a tradition we had observed since our college graduation ten years before: an evening of drinks and sometimes raucous, but always interesting, discussions. The gatherings gave us the opportunity to catch up on each other’s lives. We all looked forward to those Friday nights that left us pleasantly buzzed and conversationally sated.

There were three couples and two singles. I had been part of a couple once, and our group had been nine. When Kim left me, this group of friends had rallied around me and helped me adjust to life on my own. I would be forever thankful for their support, and grateful that they had never said anything nasty about Kim. That would have been unfair, since we had both created our mess.

Three years had passed since that mess had exploded in our faces, but I was still hurt and skittish. I had stubbornly resisted any and all attempts to set me up with someone new. I couldn’t begin to count the number of times I had heard, “Come on, Kara, she’s my BFF/sister/niece/co-worker/daughter, and you’ll love her! Just give her a chance.” But it was easier to be on my own than risk another relationship, and deal with a new set of expectations. Life alone was far less complicated.

When others in the group shared stories about their home lives, or the things they had done with their partners and families, I often sat in silence. Admittedly, I listened with envy to their tales of harmony and “coupleness.” When I did share, it was usually an anecdote from my job as a county social worker. But the realities of my life were embarrassingly pedestrian and, to my own thinking, dull as dishwater.

One Friday evening in June, Peggy pitched the question we routinely asked each other at our gatherings. “What makes this a TGIF Friday?”

“Thank God It’s Friday Friday??? That’s rather redundant, isn’t it?” interjected Deb, the English teacher. We all hissed and booed good-naturedly. She made it a point to mention this every time we raised the question.

This evening I decided to push myself and start with a story of my day. It was the tale of a nasty, demeaning client I had dealt with earlier that morning. Mentally, I’d already filed the miserable day under the category of “Sometimes you just can’t win, no matter what you do.”

“I hope you put that ass in the rear-view mirror where he belonged, Kara,” Cindy commented after I had finished telling my story. Proudly, I told her I had done just that. It had been a long time since I had offered a slice of my life; I guess I felt it had been my turn.

After our “check-ins,” as many of us were finishing our first drinks, the conversation moved to more entertaining topics. Two lesbian-themed movies were now playing at our local “art house” theater, Terri announced, to the group’s excited reaction.

I had seen one of the films, sitting by myself in the darkened theater watching two women make steamy love.
