CHAPTER 18

ouâre still here?â came a voice from the darkness, rudely and abruptly yanking Rebecca back to the here and now. She was on her feet and behind the tree before she had time to recognize the voice or comprehend the words that had been formed. Cassidi came closer, chuckling at Rebeccaâs reaction. Her strained features contradicted the sound of her laugh.
âCass!â Without thinking, Rebecca was around the front of the tree again, flinging her arms around her friend. It lasted just a moment, the relief of seeing Cassidi again. And then came the flood of anger now that Rebecca knew her friend was safe. âHow could you do that? How could you just leave Troy and I standing out here while you dash inside a closing door knowing who was on the other side? You could have been captured, or, who knows, even killed! You could have ended this whole thing for all of us, before we had a chance to know anything!â Rebecca was only partially succeeding in keeping her voice down, but once the stream of anger was out, her composure weakened, and once again she found herself trembling.
Looking at Cassidi, she realized she was in worse shape than herself. Her friend had no response to the tirade. She just stood there, facing Rebecca, eyes sparking in the glow of a soft light coming from above the garage, a layer of sweat glistening on her skin. Her breath was shallow, but it did not seem as if she had been running. More like that kind of panting that comes from panic or sheer terror. It was then that Rebecca realized the seriousness of Cassidiâs state, and that her initial words had been a weak attempt to appear normal. Normal she was not. It had to be bad if it shook Cassidi as much as it appeared.
Rebecca took Cassidiâs hand and pulled her out of the light and back into the relative safety of the trees. Another thought occurred to her just at that moment, as she looked up at the garage door. It was still closed, meaning Cassidi did not come out of it. It dawned on her that she must have come out the door, the one they had seen originally. Meaning that she went through at least part of this structure.
âCass, we have to climb up, fast. Troy went home already so that he could reset our trackers to turn back on at 6:45. We donât have much time, but once we get to the stream, I need you to tell me what you saw. Are you okay to move now?â Cassidi nodded but said nothing. Rebecca scrutinized her for a moment through the darkness. Making the decision that there was nothing else that could be done just now, she made the move to go, turning back to be sure Cassidi was following her.
Without Troy, they were able to climb quickly, even with the state Cassidi was in. Rebecca led the way. Cassidi followed. The girls did not talk on their way up and over.
