“What’s going on?” Turbold asked groggily.

“You won the trial,” replied Donnie.

Jet was spinning around in circles, giggling and pointing up at the sky, saying, “The clouds are like candyfloss.”

“So they are,” said Turbold, looking up.

“There is something peculiar about them,” Chuck said, swaying and smiling.

“They’ve all gone funny in the head,” said Bruce.

“It is the effect of the smoke,” said Empress Me, pulling the leaf mask from her face. “Now the smoke has cleared, they will be back to normal in a few minutes.”

“Why does it have this effect?” asked Donnie. “And how do these masks work?”

“Duh,” said Stripes. “They’re made from the antidote leaf.”

Empress Me turned to look at him. “How can you know this?” she asked.

Stripes shifted uncomfortably. “Well, I mean it stands to reason, doesn’t it?” he said. “These leaves must have some kind of antidote to whatever’s in that smoke.”

Donnie eyed him suspiciously, but Empress Me went on. “All will be revealed in the third and final trial. As Jet is the Champion of Combat and Turbold the Champion of Endurance, tomorrow they will face each other to decide who will be proclaimed the Ultimate Dragon Warrior.”

“This is a stupid competition if you ask me,” grumbled Stripes.

“No one did,” said Plato. “Jet and Turbold are worthy finalists, both of them.”

“Indeed they are, Plato,” said Empress Me. “And tomorrow we will learn which of them will be the winner.”
