I spent the next day in a gray haze where I didn’t remember anything and managed to be even quieter than usual. Enough that Mrs. Lambert, my science teacher, stopped me on the way out of class and asked me if I was all right or if something was happening in my life. I don’t remember what I said, but it was enough to appease her.

I hesitated after the dismissal bell, debating once again which bus to take. Home or the barn?

I didn’t remember deciding; I didn’t even know what I chose until I recognized the suburbs thinning into the hilly farmland on the way to the stables.

We were about ten minutes from the stop closest to the barn when everyone-on-the-bus’s cell phones—maybe eight altogether—screamed that emergency broadcast tone.

“What the fuck?” said one kid; I think his name was Brian.

I didn’t say anything. I just stared at the screen.
