“I think we’d better have a word in my office,” says the security guard.

“It was an accident, officer. We have a condition. Who’s got the card?” Annabelle protests. But the guard is already ushering them off. You wonder how they will prevent him noticing the large fishtails hidden under their blankets.

Klaus turns to you. “I don’t know about you but I’m ready to strike these mermaids off my suspect list. Forgetful shoplifters, they may be. Criminal masterminds, they definitely are not.”

You nod in agreement, but your mind is elsewhere. As far as the police are concerned, your boss is a prime suspect. You feel conflicted. You want to defend him, but you also want to learn the truth. Klaus always tells you that everyone lies. And in this case, that includes him. Has he told you the whole truth?

“Are you all right?” asks Klaus.

You shake yourself. What are you doing, doubting your own boss? You can’t seriously suspect Klaus. You tell him you’re fine.

“I think we need to speak to Darka,” says Klaus. “But where is he most likely to be?”
