THE THREE SOULSâChapter 11
I sat in the cooler for about ten days. Finally Schultz said I would be getting out and be back at my job in the library soon. I proceeded to ask him some more questions, but he remained closed-mouthed about everything. I was sure I would find out more when I got out of the cooler.
I wondered about whether or not Vinny and David would still be able to work on their art. I thought about how Pickett said that in over fourteen years heâd never seen anything like this. Right before I went in the cooler I got word that my lawyer was coming to talk to me about my case. I also had acquired some good behavior and was going to get an overnight with Kitty, but I didnât know if that would happen now. I found out that the warden could change his mind in a heartbeat, and if that was the case he could put me back in the cooler. I heard Schultz fumbling with his keys.
âChambers, youâre getting out. But if I hear any more shit out of you, then youâre going back in.â
âI hear you, Schultz.â
The door slid open and after ten days in the cooler I was face to face with Schultz.
âChambers, you look like shit.â
âYou would too if you had to spend ten day in here. Where are we going?â
âYouâre going to clean up, and then youâre going back to the library.â
I was escorted to the bathrooms and then taken back to the library. When I walked in I saw Pickett thumbing through the card files. His left eye twitched rapidly as he looked up and saw me in the room.
âLook whoâs here⦠The man everyone is talking about.â
âEveryone is talking about me?â
âSure, after that article: Van Gogh and Mozart are reincarnated in the Huntsville prison. Man, this is Huntsville, nothing happens in this hellhole. Except for when they electrocute someone. But we havenât done that for a while. Youâre a star, man. Everyone wants to talk to you. Holbrooke didnât know what to do. On one hand, he didnât like the publicity, but on the other hand, the reporters wouldnât stop calling.
âWhat happened to Vinny and David?â I asked.
âTheyâre still here.â Holbrooke was going to destroy their work after the publicity in the paper, but then he decided to leave it alone for fear of a backlash from sympathetic supporters.
âWhy did I get put in the cooler?â
âTo give Holbrooke a chance to decide on a game plan. Somebody is going to want to interview you eventually, but I donât know if you should be talking to reporters.â Picket stepped back and adjusted his glasses.
âIâve got to get to work. I want you to catalog these books.â
Pickett cut off the conversation as a couple of guards walked by to check on the library.
Pickett said I was a star. How crazy is that? Holbrooke was pissed but he couldnât touch me because I now had sympathetic supporters. It sounded like Vinny and David were getting quite a bit of press also.
