âSo what are we going to do?â Cal asked, once he had stopped crying and calmed down. It had been a long while since he manufactured tears. He couldn't remember the last time he felt sad, let alone the last time he cried. âI mean, we don't even know how many people are infected. For all we know, the whole town could be sick.â
âI just thought of something,â Jimmy said, while examining the crack on the wall.
âWhat?â Jordan asked.
âWhy aren't any kids sick?â
Jordan and Cal looked at each other. They shrugged at the same time.
âEveryone has stories about the adults being sick, right? Your dad, Barty's mom, her friend, Mr. Wilkens, my dad, the Tolbert's... possibly Mr. Crowley. But I haven't seen one kid out of school this week. Except for Crow and you, who are suspended,â he said to Jordan. âI mean, at the rate the adults are getting sick, you'd think the number of kids would be about the same, right?â
âI guess that makes sense,â Cal said.
âI mean, my dad has had it for about a week, I guess. Cal, your dad has had it for a few days now. Barty's mom had it before she... ate...â the thought of finishing that sentence made him want to upchuck. âAnyway, none of us are sick. Not even so much as a cough. I feel perfectly fine. You guys?â
âI feel normal,â Jordan said.
âMe too,â Cal admitted.
âI think we are immune, guys.â He suddenly remembered Barty's mother mentioning something about how kids were unable to catch it.
âSo what if we are? I mean, that doesn't help us solve anything. It doesn't help us with an antidote.â
âCal's right,â Jordan said. âHow do we plan on stopping this thing anyway? We're not scientists. It's not like we can whip up a cure.â
Jimmy shook his head. âI don't know either... But they have to have a weakness. In every comic book I ever read or in any movie I ever saw, the bad guys always have a weakness. We just have to find it.â
âHow exactly do we do that?â Cal asked.
âWe'll have to spy on one of them.â
Jordan and Cal exchanged glances.
âSounds dangerous,â Cal said. âI mean, what if we get caught? I don't want to end up like Barty.â
Their friend's name being said out loud brought immediate silence. It didn't last long.
âBarty...â Jimmy repeated.
âIf Barty were here he'd know what to do,â Jordan said.
They all agreed. Barty would have some insight that would undoubtedly point them in the right direction. He was always the sensible one. The smartest of their little clan. They went to him for answers whenever they had questions. But now he was forever gone, unable to provide them with the guidance they needed.
âWe have to follow one of them,â Jimmy repeated. âSpy on them. And if we can... trap one.â
âAre you friggin' nuts?â Cal asked. âI don't know if you know this or not, but whatever the adults are turning into, they like to eat kids. And we're still kids, in case you haven't noticed.
