It was in the summer of 1777 that a great British armada, the likes of which we had never seen,

boldly made its way up the Chesapeake Bay unforeseen. With over 250 ships in that fleet,

they stationed themselves at the Maryland head of the Bay, in Cecil County, up the Elk River

way. This was a strategic site from which they could launch their battle plans all across

Maryland, Delaware, even New Jersey and Pennsylvania lands. So, in the Chesapeake Bay

they did intend to stay.

This was grave threat to our fledgling mid-Atlantic States, causing great alarm, much fret.

Even those who did not at first believe a full-scale war with England was really to be;

with that grand imperial British army right here in the most important American estuary,

this war was now an on-your-doorstep reality, and especially for the Bay communities.

In August that summer our unit started a march to the north, with but small skirmishes

here & there engaged along the way. Little did we know that come September to October,

it was to be the most dreadful time in the course of that 1777 Pennsylvania stay.

On Thursday September 11th we engaged the British army in a big battle at Brandywine Creek,

and then again at the Battle of the Clouds on Tuesday September 16th.

Four days later on the 20th we fought them in the Battle of the Tavern, at Paoli.

And after that, there was that great Battle at Germantown on October 4th, that was the finale.

Truth be told that was a string of battles that in the long run concluded rather badly,

as we could not prevent the British from taking Philadelphia, our new nation’s Capital city.

They did not hold our Capital though for long, for in the following year, 1778,

Philadelphia was back with the Continental Army, with us Americans where it belongs.
