The Maturity Ritual: Shara’s Story

THE CAVE OF DELIGHTS WAS COMPLETELY DARK. NO LIGHT penetrated from the outer cavern to this one. It was the same cave that Shara had been in ten years before for her coming-of-age ritual and that had been so amazing that she smiled when she thought of it. A wonderful man from a neighboring tribe had initiated her into the world of womanhood. For three days and nights, wonderful nights, she had stayed in this very cave with him, learning how to please and be pleased by men.

The People, her people, were very open about sexual matters and believed that all people should enjoy erotic activities. And she did. She’d been with many men, then settled down six years before with Garu. They’d been happy and she’d born three children. Now she was again in the Cave of Delights for the maturity ritual.

Every woman went through this but no one was willing to speak of it. The coming-of-age ritual and the maturity ritual were two of the tribe’s best-guarded secrets. She had no idea what to expect.

She remembered the layout of the cave from her previous visit: large, with a fire pit in the middle and several pieces of intricately decorated furniture. Why wasn’t there a fire? she wondered. Did it have to be so dark?

She didn’t dare move around in the blackness so she reached out and touched the cold stone of the cave wall and stood still to wait for whatever was to come. Try as she might, her eyes wouldn’t adjust to the darkness, and although time passed she couldn’t make out any shapes. Then she heard a whisper. “Shara,” it said, sounding like it was coming from behind her left ear. “Shara, are you happy with your husband?”

“Happy? Of course.”

“Think long and hard and answer again. Are you really happy with your husband? Do the two of you still have pleasures as you once did in your pallet at night?”

She hesitated. Should she tell the real truth? “We have three small children. We care for them, love them and, well, there are so many things to occupy us.”

“Tell me more,” the soft voice said.

“We don’t have the time or a private place to do some of the things we used to do in our sleeping furs.”

“Your children know what you do, and you can send them to other places. That’s not the real reason. Think more.”

She considered. “Garu is a fine husband.” Only silence greeted her. “He’s such a good man.” More silence. “I love him.”

“But?” the voice whispered.

She took a deep breath. “At the beginning it was an adventure to be together. But it’s been so long.”

“Have you forgotten the wonderful things you two used to do?”

“Oh no,” she said. “I remember it all. It’s just that, well, we just don’t do those things anymore.”

“Would you like to do them again?”

“Yes,” she admitted.

“Now?”

“Right now?”

She felt a hand untie the cloth that covered her torso and let it drop to the floor at her feet.
