[The neighbours] are watching me in case I step out of line; they talk about me enough already. (p. 166)
I am always frightened of doing something wrong; I know people would say âYou can see why her husband left herâ. (p. 166)
Male neighbours think that you are so frustrated that you will sleep with anyone. (p. 182)
The unmarried mother is discussed in some details in Chapter 9, but she too is likely to be labelled as mentally ill (maladjusted) or overpowered by driving maternal instincts or uncontrolled sexuality. Adolescent girls in particular are not allowed to express any sexual drives they may have unless they marry, and if they show any signs of promiscuity they are likely to be locked up. The majority of adolescent girls who appear in court are there because they are âat riskâ - that is, sexually active - and therefore in need of care and attention (Wilson, 1978). Adolescent boys are not sanctioned in this way, but female sexuality is deviant outside marriage and brings disgrace on its performer. Adolescent girls are likely to have their sexual activity controlled for them, older women who are believed to have too little or too much sexuality are liable to become criminals or deviants or be treated as ill. Being considered âillâ is actually a state of normality for women, as the final section will show, before we return to the working - and therefore deviant - woman.
