NINE
RAVEN
I donât want to accept the phone or the case, but Jax is looking at me in a way that makes it difficult to say no. So, le sigh, Iâm going to take the phone and case for now, but one day, I will pay him back.
Jax is holding my hand. He seems a bit raveled, like heâs stressed out. He was the last time I saw him, and Iâm not positive why. I worry, though, that it has to do with him and Hunter. I think I may be causing problems, like Zay has implied several times. Maybe I should just go back to my aunt and uncleâs house â¦
Yeah, that thought kind of crumbles when Hunter informs us of something he discovered on the security cameras at their house.
âThatâs your dad?â I ask as I squint at the computer screen.
Iâm sitting on the sofa between Jax and Hunter. Both of them are sitting close enough that their legs are pressed against mine. And like I said earlier, Jax is holding my hand. Their body heat and the scent of their cologne is wrapped around me like a warm blanket.
âIt is.â Hunterâs voice is tight, conveying his disdain for the scene happening on the computer screen. âIâm not sure why heâs there, and the audio isnât picking up.â
âYou said Zayâs there, though.â Jax leans forward, scratching his chin with his free hand. âDid you try to text him after you talked to him to see if you can get any more details?â
âI did, but he never replied.â Hunter restlessly bounces his knee up and down, the chain dangling from his beltloop jingling. âIâm not surprised. You know how he can get.â
âOr maybe he canât reply.â The words just sort of leave my lips.
Hunterâs expression sinks. âShit, I didnât even think about that.â He looks at Jax. âShould one of us go check on him?â
âDo you know how risky thatâd be?â Jax replies with his brow elevated. âEspecially with your dad there.â
âTrue.â Hunter mulls this over with a frown. âWeâll give him a bit, and then if we havenât heard anything, one of us should go check on him. Weâll just have to be careful.â
âI can go,â I offer. âItâs where I live, so it wouldnât be too crazy if I just showed up.â
âNo way,â Jax says at the same time Hunter shakes his head.
âWhy not?â Iâm a little annoyed over the fact that theyâre telling me what I can and canât do.
âBecause itâs dangerous.â Panic flashes in his eyes, and he looks like heâs veering toward some sort of dangerous ledge.
Hunter remains a bit calmer. âI know weâre coming off intense, baby, but trust me; you donât want to be near my father.â The muscle in his jaw ticks. âHe always has some ulterior motive to everything he does, and that motive is bad.â He blinks at me. âSo, itâs better to stay away from him and off his radar.â
âBut arenât I already on his radar?â I point out. âHe has you guys looking into my family.
