Chapter Six

Without thought or hesitation, Nevada shifted. His wolf had taken over, standing over Taylor as he growled, ready to take down the man who’d broken in.

The guy was tall and big-boned. Not quite fat, more like a solid weight. He had tight brown curls, ruddy cheeks, and the suit he wore didn’t quite fit the way it should, sagging in some areas while tight in others, but it was the gun in his hand that held Nevada’s attention.

Growing up, Nevada had dealt with rogue vampires and shifters, Vampire Hunters, and an occasional bar fight, but he’d never had a gun pointed at him before. Though he did have a drink thrown in his face once by some drunken female who took it personally when Nevada politely turned her down.

“Get out of the way, wolf. I’ve only been paid for one kill, not two, but you’ll be a freebie if you stand in my way.”

Paid to kill? Nevada had no idea what the guy was talking about.

Lowering his head, he snarled, letting the man know he wasn’t moving. It didn’t help that Taylor had shifted into his bunny form. Nevada would’ve thought the guy would run away, but to his surprise and irritation, Taylor stayed right under him, as if he didn’t want to leave Nevada to deal with the gunman on his own.

Nevada tried to use his hind leg to shove the bunny under the couch, but Taylor kept wrestling with his leg and then hurrying back under him. Nevada was going to have a long talk with Taylor about needlessly putting himself in harm’s way.

“Just hand over Taylor, or I’ll shoot you both,” the stranger said, gun still gripped firmly in his beefy hand.

Before Nevada could attack, the front door swung open, two men with guns and buzzed haircuts spilling in. Nevada was downright confused when the two men pointed their guns at the other stranger.

What in the hell was going on?

“Put your gun down!” the tallest of the newcomers shouted in a no-nonsense bark. If Nevada had a gun, he’d have put his down from the tension and determination in the man’s tone.

The first intruder shot at the two newcomers and then spun on his heavy heel, bolting for the kitchen. The one who’d shouted took off after him. Nevada snarled at the remaining intruder.

The guy didn’t look happy. He still had his gun out and swung it toward Nevada. “Easy now.”

Nevada shifted into his human form. He wanted answers, and he couldn’t get them being a wolf. “Who the fuck are you?”

The man’s gaze darted to Taylor. Nevada glanced down at Taylor, who hadn’t shifted back yet. Instead, his small, white form was hidden behind Nevada’s bare leg. Bunnies were small, but not small enough to use a leg for cover.

“Shift, Taylor,” Nevada commanded.

When the bunny tried to scurry under the couch, Nevada grabbed him by a hind leg and pulled until he had Taylor in his grasp. Using the creature’s scruff, Nevada picked him up until they were eye level.
