Chapter Six

Whilst Leif was using his strength to lift the wheel and put it in position to be slid on the wagon, Kristin was being dragged from her horse, a large hand over her mouth to stifle her cries for help. Leif managed to get the wheel on and then he turned around, a triumphant smile on his face, only to see that he was held at sword point by several Vikings in full fighting gear. Their helmets were all alike, and he immediately recognized the insignia on them.

“Pick up your sword and prepare to die!” A large man with a gruff voice stepped forward to challenge him.

“Sir, I cannot do that,” Leif calmly replied. “I gave my promise to your daughter that I would not run you through.”

“You captured my daughter and gave her a promise of that sort?” Magnus roared, rivaling Ulf with his loud voice.

“Sir, I did not capture Kristin.”

“Let me go you oaf!” Leif heard his wife yell loudly, and then he heard a crash before she came running as fast as her short legs would carry her. “You will let me through at once!” She shoved one of her father’s men aside and ran to stand with her new husband. “Father, I am so angry with you it does not bear speaking about! Take your men and go home at once. You are embarrassing me in front of my husband!”

“Husband?” Magnus repeated, his voice a perfect growl to match his son’s.

“Father, Kristin is not happy to be rescued,” a young man said as he approached. He was covered with briars, and it was plain as could be that Kristin had fought him and won.

“How do you mean this, daughter?”

“I mean it the way most people mean it, Father. I have made my own choice as to whom I would marry, and I chose this man for my husband, and he chose me! We are legally wed, the contracts signed by each of us, and before you ask, yes, the marriage is consummated.” She looked up at Leif and said in a gentle tone of voice, “Thank you for not killing the old fool!” In the next moment a hard hand landed upon her rump. “Ouch!” she squealed.

“The man is your father and is entitled to your respect, wife. Apologize at once, lest I sit down and take you over my knee here and now!” The threat was not uttered for effect; Leif meant the words, and whilst Kristin did not wish to apologize, she did not wish a spanking in front of her sire and his men even more.

“I am sorry for being so disrespectful, Father. I did not expect you to overtake us. Did you not go to Ulf first?” she asked.

“Nay! I thought you went for an early morning ride and were taken captive.”

“Nay, this is not what happened. I went to my brother for help because I did not wish to marry a man I do not love.”

“You ran away?” Magnus asked in disapproval.
