CHAPTER 16

A Grand Night Out

Church watched on through a set of high-powered binoculars as the event planners began arriving and setting up for the hospital gala. The wind was starting to howl around him, and the conjecture had been for a storm to move in soon, an apt forecast if ever he'd heard one.

His conversation with Mr Gould had seemed to be on a knife edge for quite some time before the old man had finally relented and agreed to help. It might have been odd for him to give both his blessing and his help, but Church wasn't exactly an expert on sentimentality and didn't pretend to be.

He'd explained the situation with Kira and Phoebe and how the doctor had his marker. He owed the woman and he always paid his debts. He wondered if it was that sort of loyalty and commitment that gave value to his boss in the first place. He'd never failed Mr Gould in all these years where other men had come and gone from the old man's employ. He'd always carried his orders with meticulous detail, and he'd never questioned them even when he hadn't agreed with them. Case in point being when Calum Fox had lost a package during shipping, and Mr Gould had insisted on Church cleaning house to send an example. That sort of heavy-handed approach had seemed, quite literally, like overkill to him, but he’d done as he was ordered without complaint. Perhaps at his advanced time of life, Mr Gould didn't want to try and replace him and so had given him some kind of special dispensation. Regardless of the old man's reasons for agreeing to help, Church knew that there was a good chance that there would be a price to be paid at some point in the near future. Men like Mr Gould didn't do things out of the kindness of their hearts; he wasn't even sure if the old man had one anymore.

Fisher Snr had been true to his word and had used his connections within the upper echelons of society to track down where Mr Hopes was going to be next.

It had been remarkably easier than Church had feared, but apparently Hopes wasn't all that concerned with hiding his presence and had used his real name on his dealings with the hospital.

Bright and Fisher weren't handling the new wing at St Augustine’s personally, but they had enough of a reach to eventually track down who was funding the project.

It had taken most of the night, but Fisher had been only too willing to work off his debt after Church had removed the evidence of his son's misplaced temper. Mr Gould used the firm occasionally when he had a need for real-estate purchases and so Fisher had their number.

He was a little surprised to find that his activities that night had been observed by a cleaning lady, but he respected her holding onto the leverage and not using it for something as obvious as money.
