Lorraine ignored her. âJust tell us where and when. And you have to pay us fifty cents.â
âJerry,â said the shorter one, âthis is too good to pass up. Your dad was going to pay us thirty cents each. If these strange girls want to paint the fence, we donât have to do it, and we still get ten cents each.â
âActually itâs tenââ
âShh!â Lorraine hissed at Mimi, worried that her math skills would end up reducing their wages. To the boys she said, âTell us where and when.â
âWe were going to paint it while my dadâs at work on Monday,â Jerry said. âItâs on Thirty-First Street and State. Canât miss it. Itâs the only house with a fence. I canât believe you want to do this.â
âWeâll be there. But you pay us when we show up. I donât trust you to pay us after weâre done.â
âWhere are we supposed to get fifty cents?â Jerry asked.
Lorraine shrugged as she and Mimi walked away. âYouâll figure it out.â
âWhat have you gotten me into?â Mimi asked as they entered Miss Kerryâs classroom.
âIâm not sure,â said Lorraine, âbut wear your oldest dress and bring one of your fatherâs old long-tail shirts to wear over your dress as a smock. This could get messy.â
âThe Ferris Wheel,â sighed Lorraine. âOh, how I hope we get a chance to ride it!â
She and Mimi were in Lorraineâs room, trying to clean white paint off their faces and hands. Mrs. Dupré had given them the idea to wear scruffy, torn pants and shirts that her husband kept around, rather than dresses, so at least they werenât faced with cleaning their clothes. After finishing the job, theyâd run all the way back to Lorraineâs apartment, panting and giggling.
âI got some on my shoe,â Mimi complained.
âYouâll start a new fashion,â Lorraine said. âAnyway, what do you most want to see if we go back to the Expo?â
âProbably the volcano,â said Mimi. âAnd you mean when we go back, not if. Itâs looking like weâll make a total of seventy cents for childcare. We just got fifty more. Thatâs a dollar twenty. Weâre more than halfway there.â
âYes, because now we only need . . .â Lorraine paused, hoping Mimi would jump in with the answer.
âEighty cents, silly.â
âExactly right. Know any others who need their fences painted? Or maybe we could start tarring roofs.â They fell backward onto Lorraineâs bed, laughing. âSeriously, though, who would hire us?â
âSomeone with money.â Mimi groaned. âNobody around here has money.â
Sitting bolt upright, Lorraine gasped. âThatâs it! We should go to the Loop, where all the fancy people live. They have all the money!â
âWe donât know anybody in the Loop. What are we supposed to do, dance on the sidewalk and hold out a hat?â To demonstrate, Mimi did an energetic solo version of the two-step, a popular ballroom dance. Kids at school learned it from their older siblings and showed it off in the corridors, which usually landed them in the principalâs office.
âA thousand dollars,â Lorraine quipped. âThatâs how much weâll earn if you do that dance in front of rich people.
