CHAPTER NINE

Somehow, despite my tardiness, I got the job. Sean laughed off my surprise by telling me I couldn’t be a worse receptionist that young Jamie, who’d often tried to bite visitors. I assumed he was joking. I hoped he was joking. My duties seemed simple: receive and announce visitors. Total number in the first week? Zero. Take notes from Sean, compose emails and send. Except Sean seemed happier chatting to me than dictating. Total letters in the first week? Six. The phones rarely rang; Sean made his own coffee, and almost no one passed through reception. By the time Friday came around, I’d begun to wonder why they needed me at all. To pass the time, I delved into the filing system, the club’s schedule and the membership records, and found them to be a shambles. I scribbled down a plan of action for the following week and decided, if it was still quiet, I’d offer Sean a better system for each of the three. I’d stayed in a guest room all week, living out of my travel bag in the quiet and comfortable room on the second floor where no one troubled me. It was equipped with cable, Wi-Fi and a surprisingly lavish en-suite. For the weekend, however, I’d be driving back to Newport to stay with my Aunt Deb. Sean mentioned that the club was usually busier after Thanksgiving, and I might even be needed for weekend work. But that was two weeks in the future, and he was happy for me to be away. Besides, I still had a lot of personal stuff stored at Deb’s house, and I needed to ship it up to my room at the club.

When I’d asked Sean about the activities at the club, he’d pointed me in the direction of a promotional video on the reception screen. He smiled proudly all the way through the five-minute flick, which described the club as a pioneering outdoor adventure center, designed and maintained by passionate wilderness lovers for those who sought the ultimate in unspoiled and uninterrupted rural escapade. I thought it sounded a little corporate-speak, but I didn’t want to diminish Sean’s enthusiasm.

“I’ve never heard of this place,” I said. “Do you advertise?”

“It’s strictly invitation-only. We’re very selective when it comes to membership.”

“Ah, that explains my phone greeting.”

“Which part?”

“When someone calls, the first thing I ask is, who referred them. If they can’t give me a name, I palm them off with an email address that probably never gets read.”

“Not true.” Sean wagged a finger at me. “I check it once a day, just in case we have a genuine reason to accept. Not everyone needs a referral, although it makes things much easier.”

“Okay. I don’t feel so bad now. How many new members have you had in the past year?”

“About six, I think. Maybe seven.”

“See, that’s your problem.” I chopped the side of my hand into my palm. “That’s why no-one comes here. You need to set up a two-level membership system.
