Aubrey headed back to the office, unsure about whether or not she should feel better about this. On the one hand, she had at least one recruit. Mackenzie seemed like she could be an amazing asset for their company. Smart, energetic, and determined. More than that, she was willing to ask difficult questions.

Aubrey strode back into the interns’ conference room/office, she put her hands on her hips and looked out at the boys. “How’s everyone doing?”

“Fine,” one of them said without looking up.

She heard their thoughts, the irritation, the reluctance, and the simple frustration. These boys hated the idea that a girl like her had beaten their best player.

“Where’s Darren?” Aubrey asked.

“He stepped out for a minute,” said one of the guys.

“He stepped out?”

She glanced over at one of them. “Jose, do know where he went?”

“Nope,” he replied without any of the respect he would have given to a male manager. No, he didn’t sound outwardly disrespectful, but the shift in tone could still be discerned.

“Go find him and bring him back here,” she said.

“Sure thing, boss,” Jose said as he pushed his chair back and headed for the exit.

After he left, she announced, “I want to see where you all are on your projects. Get ready to show me exactly what you’ve done and what your plans are.”

She walked from one station to the next as she evaluated their work. Technically, she didn’t understand a lot of the programming concepts, but she still needed to make sure they remained on track. These boys seemed inclined to let their attention drift to their favorite games.

Since Aubrey didn’t want to be the kind of boss who asked for information she couldn’t possibly understand, she tried a different tactic. After talking to the first intern, she came up with a good solution.

The boy stated his progress, and she searched through his mind.

“What are you concerned about?”

He thought of one logic chain in particular. He was worried the program might not be robust enough, like these lines of code might lead to a syntax error or infinite regress.

“Nothing. It’s good.”

“What about the potential for infinite regress?”

The boy blinked, surprised. She wasn’t supposed to know about that.

“I’m not a programmer,” she acknowledged, “But I’m good at managing boys like you.”

Boys like you. She hadn’t meant to use such a patronizing phrase, but it fit. And even though he tightened with anger, this boy knew he shouldn’t mess with a woman like Aubrey. Soon enough, these young men would learn they shouldn’t mess with any women at all.

The intern looked like he wanted to say something, only then he thought better of it.

Perhaps these boys didn’t talk about The Powers, yet they knew the truth anyway. Or at least, they could suspect.

Aubrey continued to work with the interns as she checked their work and made sure they stayed on task.

Halfway through, Darren came back.

“Oh, it’s my personal assistant,” she said, standing up straight. She crossed her arms over her chest and looked right at him. “Where were you?”

“Taking a break,” he said.
