Suggestion for Difficulties with Stage 4 Lessons
Based on the larger amount of text for which the student is responsible, students may try to rely on memory instead of images to provide detailed descriptions. This will be recognizable when a student exclaims he is finished with the page, hands you the book, and then says, âOh, no; I forgot,â or provides only minimal detail. If this occurs, it is an excellent opportunity to explain the difference between memorizing the words on the page and generating visual images that change as the student reads. Memory is not the reason for the successful imagery; rather, the maintenance of the previous image is all that is needed to comprehend the text. In other words, the student is not expected to memorize a full page of text; rather, he is expected to generate an image with the first sentence, and that image will continuously change with each new sentence. This is an important difference, as these students have often responded with frustration and failure at most verbal memory tasks. However, the generation of visual images is not relying on such mechanisms but is instead using a part of the brain which has shown to be relatively efficient in those with dyslexia.
