Chapter 13
Lisbet wasn't the slightest bit refreshed when she awoke. The room was too hot from being overcrowded with four people. Mona and Elinor were both asleep slumped against the wall, and Kit was snoring lightly next to her in the bed. Adding to the claustrophobia was Pendragon, standing on her chest and kneading his paws into her breastbone as he purred loudly. She scratched him between the ears for a moment, then pushed him off her to grab the pitcher on the table. Elinorâs eyes jerked open as soon as Lisbet moved, then went to the woman sleeping beside her. She stood and followed Lisbet to the door. Apparently she would have an audience for her morning ablutions.
âI know my wife has already said it, but thank you, Lisbet.â
âItâs what anyone would have done.â Lisbet dropped the bucket down into the well.
âNo, it isnât.â Elinor reached to help her winch it back up. âI hate to ask anything more, butââ
âIâll do anything I can to help.â
âI need your ears in town today. Find out if Payne has come ashore, how many men he brought, where they intend to make camp. And find a man called Avery, if you can. He may have some men he could loan me. He still owes me a favor. If he tries to say no, remind him of that. Agree to any sum he asks for, he knows I always settle my debts.â Elinor appeared calm as she rattled off the orders, but Lisbet could tell she was still shaken from the night prior.
Lisbet splashed water on her face. âIâll see to it right away. Thereâs not much food in the house, but youâre welcome to any of it youâd like. Iâll bring more from town.â
Elinor handed her a little leather purse that jingled with heavy coins. âThis should be enough for all of it.â
Lisbet was about to protest, but Elinor folded her hand around the purse and wouldnât take it back. It must have been unnerving for the woman who seemed like she could do anything to ask someone else for help, and Lisbet realized the purse wasnât because Elinor thought she needed it. Rather, it was the one small way Elinor could still assist when everything else seemed out of her control. Lisbet tucked the purse in a pocket between the folds of her skirt without saying more.
The streets were abuzz as the deviants of Nassau swarmed between the merchant stands. Lisbet was on edge as she walked through them. Did it seem like she was passing more unfamiliar faces than usual? She studied each one suspiciously, wondering if they were Payne, or part of his crew. How would she know? Every buccaneer in Nassau seemed to have become meaner overnight, or maybe Lisbet was just seeing them in a new light for the first time. A man leered at her, beckoning with one hooked finger. She ignored his summons. Even if she didn't have more pressing matters to attend to, she
