PART TWO

I haven’t even introduced myself. My name is Paula, Paula Caddick. I’m 51 years old and I’m a woman whose world has been turned upside down in the space of just a few short hours. Married for the last 25 years. I have three wonderful children a 19 year old daughter at university, a 17 year old daughter who is doing her A levels and a 15 year old son. My husband Patrick is the most wonderful man and our relationship has always made me feel as though I was the luckiest woman alive. I know it’s a cliché, but I genuinely have never stopped loving him and in return I know that his love for me is equally strong. He makes me feel loved and desired. He makes me smile when he walks in the room and when he asks me about my day, his interest is genuine. To use another cliché, we are two halves of a whole. I couldn’t imagine myself without him. I love spending time with him. I love nights out and trips away with him and I love just being at home with him curled up on the sofa. We have never lost our passion for each other either. He can make me wet and horny with just one of those looks that he gives me, and our sex life has never been boring, far from it. According to my daughter we are an embarrassment and people our age just shouldn’t be doing it.

So how did things change so quickly? Why am I stood in my own hallway, listening to my husband and children laughing and joking on the other side of the door and rather than opening it and joining them all I want to do is run away and hide.

Those of you who may have read the first part of my story, will know exactly why I’m rooted to the spot, unable to turn the handle on that door. Those of you who haven’t will be wondering what could possibly have happened to make me feel the way I was feeling in that moment. The reality was that despite my apparently perfect life, someone had found a chink in my armour. He had exploited my vulnerability and in the space of a few hours had changed certainty into uncertainty and left me no longer knowing who or what I was.
