A DOOR IN THE MOUNTAIN

Breathe.

Air started to fill up her lungs. Suzan lay in the middle of a mountain. Her body was cold to the bone, and she tried to open her eyes, but they wouldn’t budge. Her stomach flexed with pain deep in her gut. She wanted to move, but her body was too tired to.

Breathe.

Suzan slammed her fist into the cold ground and forced herself to sit up but couldn’t. She wanted to scream for help but knew no one would come. The pain in her gut got worse, and she pulled her arms across to hope the pain would subside. The pain reminded her of the first time she used a spell to force a miscarriage on herself.

The pain was real, and she bled for weeks after. Over time her body would grow to adjust to what she had to go through, but she wasn’t able to move when she tried the spell again. Was this the same thing?

Breathe.

Suzan took in a deep breath, and it was nice. It crawled down her throat and explored her whole body. She calmed herself, and the pain in her stomach slowly went away. She slowly opened her eyes, seeing dark spots in her view. She blinked them away. Suzan turned her head to see smoke.

She slowly sat up but felt a sting of pain in her head. She ran her gloved fingers through her thick red hair to feel a bump and wanted to cast something to help her, but she was afraid of what might happen if she did now. Suzan blinked a few more times and took another deep breath. She looked at the aftermath of what she did.

The side of the mountain was blackened by fire. It was burnt into the side of the mountain, and the smell of burnt flesh and hair filled the air. There was a dip on the trail from the power of the blast. It would have to be built into a bridge if anyone tried to walk through here.

Suzan looked down at her hands and whispered, “Did I do this?”

A flash of tingling sensation flowed through her. She could feel strength gathering up in her, and the twist in her stomach moved. Suzan grabbed her stomach and calmed herself. Suzan knew what bale fire was but couldn't believe she knew how to use it or some of it.

She tried to stand but slipped down.

Suzan looked around to see her horse was gone, and she remembered that it had been shot and fallen off the side. She looked around to see the staff lying on the ground near the edge of the mountain. Suzan crawled over to touch the staff gently. The tingling sensation rushed through her hands and into the staff, the staff pulsed with magic. It glowed to a crimson red and dimmed to the brown staff.

Her stomach felt better.

Suzan used the staff to help her stand up. She leaned on the staff heavily and looked around to figure out where to go.
