Milly followed the sound of her voice, hastily making her way up the steps while Cleo distracted Copper.

“Sticking a message in a passing coconut just won’t meet my deadline…you know, I was thinking, we could work something out. I could highlight your place as a ‘tropical getaway.’ I’ll put it on my list of ‘Top Destinations’…if you take us back to shore.”

“I can’t take the nagging, man! The reason I leave Alvira is to get away from the nagging!”

Milly was back upstairs, undetected, but Cleo continued, “Nagging! I’m a working Alsatian with an editor in Upper Manhattan waiting for my story to pop up on his PC! If Kleinberg gets the slightest whiff of foul play, you’ll have reporters parachuting down like rain out here!”

“You want me to shut you up?” Copper reached menacingly for his machete.

Milly came quickly to Cleo’s side, rolled on her back, and performed what appeared to be breakdancing. “Are you all right?” Cleo asked. “It’s my party trick; I hope he likes it.” Sure enough, Copper burped loudly and returned to roasting his yam, leaving Milly and Cleo to discuss the matter at hand.

“She’s alive, and she needs water,” Milly briefed Cleo. “Do you see where he keeps the water?” Before Cleo could answer, Milly smiled and said with admiration, “You really are a plucky diva.”

They managed to roll bottles of water over the edge for Gabriel. Then later, in the still of the night, when only the lapping waves moved, sympathy overcame Milly’s fear. She crept over to Copper’s coal stove, picked up the remaining yam in her mouth, and snuck downstairs to give it to her patient, who was very thankful for the warm food.

“I’m Milly,” she introduced herself.

“I’m Gabriel.”

Fortunately, the bulrushes had lodged under the shack, and Gabriel pulled Milly onto her floating bed.

“I’ve never seen anyone before, but I see you…your light.”

“I’m from the Kingdom of Light.”

“Oh, well, that explains it. This is the best night of my life,” Milly confided. “I’m sorry it’s not your best night—were you in an accident?”

“I was attacked by a crocodile.”

“A crocodile! Wow.”

Gabriel smiled, “The water really helped. Do you live out here?”

“Oh, no, we arrived earlier—my friend is upstairs. We got kidnapped together.”

“You were kidnapped?” Milly put her paw on Gabriel’s mouth and nodded her head.

“We have to be quiet; he’s very cruel when he wakes up.”

“I’ll help you escape somehow,” Gabriel assured Milly.

The little dog whispered in Gabriel’s ear before saying goodnight and climbing the steps, her heart filled with hope.
